Quick answer
October to March is the best time to visit Amritsar. Days are 18–30 °C, the marble parikrama at the Golden Temple is comfortable barefoot, and the Attari-Wagah ceremony is pleasant to sit through. Diwali and Guru Nanak Jayanti in November are the most spectacular nights at the temple. Avoid May and June, when afternoons reach 40 °C or more.

When is the best time to visit Amritsar?
October to March. Amritsar works year-round because the Golden Temple never closes, but the walk around the sarovar is done barefoot on marble, and the Attari-Wagah ceremony means sitting in an open stand for two hours or more. Both are far more pleasant between 15 °C and 30 °C.
Season by season
October–November. The best weeks. Clear skies, 25–30 °C days and the two biggest nights at Harmandir Sahib: Bandi Chhor Divas on Diwali (8 November in 2026) and Guru Nanak Jayanti, around 24 November 2026. Expect lakhs of devotees, and book hotels near the temple at least a month out.
December–January. Nights fall to 4–6 °C, and fog can delay morning flights and the Shatabdi from Delhi. Winter is also when Punjabi food is at its best: sarson da saag, makki di roti, pinni and gajar halwa.
February–March. Mustard fields flower across the Majha belt and days are mild. A good time to add a drive out to the villages, or to Harike wetland for winter birds.
April–June. Baisakhi in April is a big occasion. After that, temperatures climb to 40 °C and the marble can scorch even with the jute mats laid down.
July–September. Monsoon humidity and short, heavy showers. Crowds are lower except on long weekends.
Wagah timing
The retreat ceremony at Attari is held every evening, and BSF shifts it with the season. From 16 October 2026 it was moved to 5:00–5:30 pm; in summer it runs closer to 6 pm. Gates open well before, and the best seats fill fast, so leave Amritsar, about 30 km away, by 2:30 pm in winter.
Go to the Golden Temple twice: once before dawn for the Palki Sahib procession, and once after dark when the gold reflects in the water.
