Where should you stay in Amritsar?

As close to the Golden Temple as you can afford. The temple is at its best before dawn and late at night, and the old city around it is closed to most traffic, so a hotel within walking distance turns those visits from an effort into a pleasure. Families who want space and a pool should look at Ranjit Avenue or the hotels on GT Road and Airport Road, and accept a short drive.

Walking distance versus comfort

Hotels near Heritage Street are mostly compact 3-star properties. They are clean and convenient, but rooms are small and some face inward. Battery rickshaws and porters cover the last stretch from the car drop-off points. Ranjit Avenue and the GT Road hotels offer bigger rooms, parking and restaurants, but every temple visit becomes a 15–30 minute ride.

Staying at the gurdwara

The SGPC's sarais beside the complex offer free and low-cost rooms, primarily for pilgrims. They are simple, with strict rules on tobacco, alcohol and conduct, and fill quickly around Gurpurab, Diwali and Baisakhi. If you stay, a donation is appropriate.

Which area for which traveller

  • Pilgrims and couples: Heritage Street or the sarais.
  • Families with children: Ranjit Avenue, or a temple-side hotel with a lift.
  • Elders: a temple-side hotel with car drop-off close by, or GT Road with a driver.

For Gurpurab or Bandi Chhor Divas, book a temple-side hotel a month ahead. Roads close and drivers can't get near the old city.

Frequently asked questions

Can tourists stay at the Golden Temple?
Yes, within limits. The SGPC runs sarais beside the complex with free dormitories and low-cost rooms, primarily for pilgrims. Visitors of any faith can ask at the enquiry office, but rooms are basic, rules on tobacco and alcohol are strict, and availability is limited on festival days. A donation is appropriate if you stay.
Is Ranjit Avenue far from the Golden Temple?
It is about 20 minutes by car in normal traffic, longer in the evening rush and on festival days, when roads into the old city close and you walk the last stretch. Ranjit Avenue's hotels are newer and roomier, so many families accept the drive and plan two temple visits, one at dawn and one at night.
Which area is best for the Wagah border trip?
Any area works. The Attari-Wagah border is about 30 km west, roughly 45–60 minutes by taxi, and most visitors leave the old city around 2:30 pm in winter. GT Road hotels are slightly closer to the highway, but the time saved is small, so choose your hotel for the Golden Temple rather than for Wagah.
