Quick answer
For a first visit, stay in Connaught Place: it is central, on the Metro's main interchange, and close to Old Delhi and India Gate. Karol Bagh suits families on a mid-range budget, South Delhi suits couples and repeat visitors, and Aerocity is best for early flights. Paharganj is cheapest but scruffy. Lutyens' Delhi has the city's grand hotels.

Which area of Delhi is best for tourists?
For a first visit, Connaught Place gives the best balance: central, on the Metro's main interchange, and 10–15 minutes from Old Delhi and India Gate. Karol Bagh suits families on a mid-range budget, South Delhi suits couples and repeat visitors, and Aerocity is the answer for early flights. Paharganj is the cheapest but rough around the edges.
Pick by what you'll do
- Old Delhi and the monuments: Connaught Place, Karol Bagh or Paharganj.
- Food, cafés and evenings out: South Delhi.
- A single night before a flight: Aerocity.
- A comfortable stay with elders: the Lutyens' Delhi hotels, with big rooms and quiet gardens.
Getting around from your hotel
Choose a hotel within a 10-minute walk of a Metro station. Delhi traffic is slow at peak hours, and the Metro reaches Chandni Chowk, the Qutub Minar, Hauz Khas, Akshardham and the airport. The Airport Express runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station in about 20 minutes, putting Connaught Place and Paharganj within half an hour of your flight.
Winter and summer considerations
In winter, smog and fog can make early mornings grey, so a central base cuts the time you spend on the roads. In summer, a pool matters more than you'd expect; most South Delhi B&Bs don't have one, while the Lutyens' and Aerocity hotels do.
Some hotels near New Delhi station advertise a cheap airport pickup and then change the price. Confirm the rate in writing before you land.
