Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah

    • Morning: Arrive by an early flight or overnight train and check in near the Golden Temple. First darshan at Harmandir Sahib, then lunch at the langar.

    • Afternoon: Jallianwala Bagh, a short walk away, then leave by 2:30 pm for the Attari-Wagah Beating Retreat, which was running at 5–5:30 pm from mid-October 2026.

    • Evening: Back by about 7 pm. Amritsari fish or dal makhani for dinner, then the Golden Temple lit up at night.

Stay: Old city, walking distance from the Golden Temple

Carry photo ID to Wagah and leave bags in the car.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Dawn at the temple, museums and the bazaar

    • Morning: The Palki Sahib procession before dawn, then a kulcha-chole breakfast and a lassi topped with malai.

    • Afternoon: The Partition Museum on Heritage Street, then Hall Bazaar for juttis, phulkari and papad.

    • Evening: Gobindgarh Fort's evening shows or Durgiana Temple, then your onward flight or train.

The Partition Museum is closed on Mondays. If day two is a Monday, see it on the morning of day one.

Why two days is right for Amritsar

Amritsar's sights are compact, but the best of it comes at specific hours: the Golden Temple at dawn and after dark, and the Wagah ceremony just before sunset. Two days lets you see the temple at both ends of the day without cutting short the border trip, and leaves time for the food, which is half the reason people come.

What the cost covers

The mid-range figure of about ₹7,000 per person assumes one night in a 3-star or 4-star hotel near the Golden Temple on twin sharing, airport or station transfers, a private cab to Wagah and back, and entry fees for the museum and fort. Langar is free. It excludes flights, trains and restaurant meals.

Timing the day

Wagah eats most of an afternoon: about an hour each way plus two hours in the stands. That is why day one starts at the temple and ends there after dark. The ceremony time moves with the season, so recheck it the day before.

Stay within walking distance of the Golden Temple. Roads into the old city are closed to cars, and a 4 am walk to the Palki Sahib is easy if you are close.

Plan the rest

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Golden Temple and Wagah border on the same day?
Yes, and most visitors do. See the Golden Temple and eat at the langar in the morning, visit Jallianwala Bagh, then leave by about 2:30 pm in winter for the Wagah ceremony. You will be back in the old city by around 7 pm, in time to see the temple illuminated at night.
How do I get to Amritsar from Delhi?
Flights take about an hour and are the quickest option. Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains from New Delhi take roughly 5.5–6.5 hours, and overnight trains arrive early in the morning. By road it is about 450 km on NH44, or seven to eight hours, which suits families combining it with stops in Punjab.
Is two days in Amritsar enough for a family with children?
Yes. The Golden Temple, langar and Wagah ceremony appeal to children, and Gobindgarh Fort's evening shows are built for families. Keep the pre-dawn Palki Sahib optional for younger children, and carry snacks and water for Wagah, where you will sit for two hours or more.
