Quick answer

Arrive on day one for Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah and sunset at Mehtab Bagh. On day two, enter the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then drive 37 km to Fatehpur Sikri before continuing to Jaipur or back to Delhi. Staying overnight is what makes the sunrise possible. Mid-range land costs start around ₹8,000 per person.

  2. Agra
  3. Fatehpur Sikri
  4. Jaipur or Delhi

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Agra Fort and the east bank

    • Morning: Take an early express train from Delhi, under two hours to Agra Cantt, or drive the Yamuna Expressway in about 3.5–4 hours, stopping at Sikandra on the way. Check in.

    • Afternoon: Agra Fort for 1.5–2 hours, then cross the river to Itimad-ud-Daulah, the 'Baby Taj'.

    • Evening: Sunset at Mehtab Bagh, facing the Taj across the Yamuna. Mughlai dinner on Fatehabad Road or a rooftop in Taj Ganj.

Stay: Taj Ganj or Fatehabad Road

    Day 2

Taj Mahal at sunrise and Fatehpur Sikri

    • Morning: Enter the Taj Mahal at opening time, about 30 minutes before sunrise, and allow 2.5–3 hours. Back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out.

    • Afternoon: Drive 37 km to Fatehpur Sikri, about an hour: Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza and the palace complex, 2–3 hours on site.

    • Evening: Continue to Jaipur, about four hours, with an optional stop at Abhaneri's stepwell, or return to Delhi in about 4–4.5 hours.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. If day two is a Friday, swap the days around.

Why stay a night in Agra?

Most day trips from Delhi reach the Taj around 10 am, when the light is flat, the marble is hot and the crowds are at their peak. One night in Agra changes that. You see the Taj in the soft light of sunrise with a fraction of the people, and you get the quieter monuments and the Mehtab Bagh sunset the evening before. The second day then flows naturally into Fatehpur Sikri, which sits on the road to Jaipur.

What the cost covers

The mid-range figure of about ₹8,000 per person assumes a 4-star room on Fatehabad Road on twin sharing, a private car within Agra and to Fatehpur Sikri, a licensed guide for the Taj and the fort, and entry fees including the ₹200 mausoleum ticket. It excludes the train or car from Delhi and meals.

Friday and fog

Plan around two things. The Taj is closed every Friday, so make sure your sunrise morning isn't one. And from mid-December to January, fog can hide the Taj until mid-morning, so if the photograph matters, a second night gives you a second chance.

Enter by the East Gate at sunrise; its queue is usually the shortest, and hotels on Fatehabad Road are a few minutes away.

Plan the rest

See things to do in Agra for more stops, where to stay in Agra for hotel areas, and the best time to visit Agra for fog and heat. This plan slots straight into a Golden Triangle trip with Jaipur.

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Agra from Delhi worth it?
It works if you are short of time, but you see less. A day trip by early train or car gets you to the Taj by mid-morning, when it is busiest and hottest, and leaves little time for Agra Fort and nothing for Mehtab Bagh or Fatehpur Sikri. If you can spare one night, the sunrise visit is far better.
What should I do if I'm in Agra on a Friday?
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, but everything else is open. Spend Friday at Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri, and watch sunset from Mehtab Bagh, which has a clear view of the Taj across the river. Then do the Taj at sunrise on Saturday.
How far is Fatehpur Sikri from Agra?
About 37 km west, roughly an hour by car on the Jaipur road. Allow two to three hours on site for the Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza and the palace complex. Because it sits on the route to Jaipur, it is most efficient to visit on the way out of Agra rather than as a return trip.
