Our verdict
Choose the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur if you have 4–5 nights and want the Taj Mahal plus Rajasthan's most famous forts; land packages start around ₹14,000 per person. Choose a wider Rajasthan circuit if you have 7–10 nights and want Jodhpur, the Jaisalmer desert and Udaipur's lakes, from about ₹26,000 for 7 nights. First-timers short on time should do the Triangle.

What each trip actually covers
The Golden Triangle is a loop of three cities, Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, each about 3.5–5 hours apart by road. It combines Mughal monuments with one Rajput capital, and it is India's most-booked first-timer circuit. A Rajasthan tour usually starts in Jaipur and adds Jodhpur's Mehrangarh Fort, Jaisalmer's golden fort and the Sam sand dunes, and Udaipur's lakes, sometimes with Pushkar, Ranthambore or Bikaner.
In short, the Golden Triangle is Rajasthan-lite with the Taj Mahal added; a Rajasthan tour leaves the Taj out unless you add Agra at the start.
Time and cost
A 4-night Golden Triangle (Delhi one night, Agra one, Jaipur two) with a private car, driver and 3-star hotels starts around ₹14,000 per person, twin sharing. A 7-night Rajasthan circuit covering Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur starts around ₹26,000 per person; heritage hotels and a desert camp push it higher. Monument entries, guides and the Taj Mahal's main mausoleum ticket are usually extra. See the Golden Triangle trip cost and Rajasthan trip cost.
Driving and pace
The Triangle is easy on the body. Delhi to Agra takes about 3.5–4 hours on the Yamuna Expressway, or about 1 hour 40 minutes by Gatimaan Express. Agra to Jaipur is about 4.5–5 hours with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, and Jaipur back to Delhi about 5 hours. A Rajasthan circuit means longer days: Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 5–6 hours, Jodhpur to Jaisalmer about 5 hours, and Jaisalmer to Udaipur needs a stop or a long 8–9 hour day. Flying out of Udaipur saves a full day.
When to go
Both work from October to March, with winter days around 22–26°C. Agra and Delhi get dense fog from late December into January, which can delay trains and hide the Taj at sunrise. From April to June, temperatures pass 42°C across Rajasthan. Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. More on when to visit Rajasthan.
The honest trade-offs
The Triangle's weak points are Delhi traffic, weekend crowds at the Taj and commission-driven shopping stops; tell your driver upfront that you don't want them. A full Rajasthan tour is richer but tiring with children or older parents, and Jaisalmer adds two long driving days for one night in the desert.
Who should go where
First-time visitors, families and anyone with under a week should do the Golden Triangle. Travellers with 8–10 nights, couples and repeat visitors should do Rajasthan, ideally flying into Jaipur and out of Udaipur. With 9–10 nights you can join both: Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. Browse our India tour packages.
