Quick answer

Stay in Hampi village for location and atmosphere, Kamalapur or the Hosapete road for comfortable resorts, and Hosapete town for the widest choice of hotels. Across the river, Virupapur Gadde and Sanapur have laid-back guesthouses and Anegundi has heritage homestays. Families and older travellers usually prefer the resorts with pools and air-conditioning.

The best areas to stay in Hampi

Hampi village (Hampi Bazaar)

₹

Best for: Backpackers, walkers, early starts

Guesthouses at the foot of Virupaksha Temple put Hemakuta Hill, the river and the trail to Vittala within walking distance.

Rooms are basic, as building in the heritage zone is restricted, and there's noise from the temple and bazaar.

Doubles from ₹1,200 a night

Kamalapur

₹₹

Best for: Comfort near the ruins, families

A small town on the southern edge of the site, close to the Royal Centre and the museum, with the state-run hotel and some resorts.

Limited dining, and 10–15 minutes by auto to Hampi Bazaar.

Doubles from ₹3,500 a night

Hosapete road resorts

₹₹₹

Best for: Families, older travellers, couples

Resorts between Kamalapur and Hosapete with pools, restaurants and large rooms, 15–25 minutes from the main sights.

You'll drive to everything, and some feel far removed from Hampi's atmosphere.

Doubles from ₹6,000 a night

Hosapete town

₹

Best for: Budget, rail arrivals, availability

The railhead, 13 km away, has the widest range of business hotels, restaurants and ATMs.

A busy town with no heritage feel, about 30 minutes from Hampi each way.

Doubles from ₹1,800 a night

Virupapur Gadde and Sanapur

₹

Best for: Slow stays, backpackers, sunsets

Across the Tungabhadra, relaxed guesthouses among paddy fields and boulders, close to Sanapur Lake and Anegundi.

The river crossing stops at dusk and pauses in high water, which makes the main sights awkward to reach.

Doubles from ₹1,500 a night

Anegundi

₹₹

Best for: Heritage homestays, quiet

Restored village houses in Anegundi, a settlement older than Hampi itself, run as heritage stays with local food.

Across the river, so the same crossing issues apply, and rooms are few.

Doubles from ₹3,500 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Which side of the river should you stay on?

The south bank, for most people. Hampi Bazaar, Vittala, the Royal Centre and Kamalapur are all on the south side of the Tungabhadra. The north bank, with Virupapur Gadde, Sanapur and Anegundi, is relaxed and scenic, but you depend on a small ferry to cross, and it stops at dusk and when the water is high. The road detour can take an hour or more.

Hampi's heat makes a pool and reliable air-conditioning more valuable than you might expect, especially from March onwards. Families and older travellers usually prefer the resorts on the Hosapete road and use a car to reach the ruins early in the morning. Village guesthouses rarely have lifts or large family rooms, so groups with elderly members are better off in Kamalapur or on the Hosapete road.

What should you check before booking?

  • AC and power backup, essential from March to June.
  • Distance to Hampi Bazaar if you plan sunrise or sunset on the hills.
  • Ferry dependence if you choose the north bank.
  • Food: Hampi village is largely vegetarian and alcohol-free because of the temple; resorts are more flexible.

Book Christmas–New Year and Hampi Utsav dates early. The village's guesthouses are small and fill quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Hampi or Hosapete?
Stay in or near Hampi if you can. Hampi village and Kamalapur let you reach the ruins at sunrise and return easily for a midday rest. Hosapete has more hotels and is handy for the railway station, but it's about 30 minutes each way and has none of Hampi's atmosphere. It's a good fallback when Hampi is full.
Can I stay on Hampi Island?
Yes. Virupapur Gadde, often called Hampi Island, has guesthouses among the paddy fields, popular with backpackers. Remember that the small ferry across the Tungabhadra stops around dusk and is suspended when the river is high, so evenings and monsoon days can leave you cut off from the main sites.
Do Hampi guesthouses have AC?
Many now do, but not all, and power cuts happen. From March to June, when highs reach 37–39°C, confirm air-conditioning and power backup before booking. Budget rooms in Hampi village often have only fans. Resorts on the Hosapete road and hotels in Hosapete reliably offer AC.
