Quick answer

Hampi Utsav, also called Vijaya Utsav, is a three-day state-run festival of music, dance and light shows staged among the ruins of Vijayanagara, held in recent years between January and March. Dates are announced only a few weeks ahead. If you can be flexible, fold it into a three-night Hampi trip, staying in Hosapete or Kamalapur.

Highlights

  • Classical and folk performances on stages set against the ruins
  • Sound-and-light shows on Vijayanagara history
  • Craft and food stalls, rural sports and heritage walks
  • Sunrise from Matanga Hill over the boulder landscape
  • The Vittala temple and its stone chariot

What actually happens

Hampi Utsav, also called Vijaya Utsav, is a three-day festival run by the Karnataka government to celebrate the Vijayanagara empire, whose capital stood here from the 14th to the 16th century. Stages are set up against the ruins, and evenings bring classical and folk dance, Carnatic and Hindustani music, Kannada film music nights and a sound-and-light show. During the day there are craft and food stalls, heritage walks and rural sports, and in some years helicopter rides over the ruins and water activities on the Tungabhadra.

When it happens

The dates move from year to year and are announced by the state only a few weeks in advance. In recent years it has been held between January and March, and in some years it has been skipped. If you want certainty, plan a Hampi trip in that window and fold the Utsav in if it lines up.

Best time of day

Mornings and late afternoons are for the ruins: the Vittala temple and stone chariot, Virupaksha temple, the Royal Enclosure, and Matanga Hill at sunrise. Evenings are for the stages. Weekends draw large crowds from across north Karnataka, so weekdays are easier.

Where to stay and what it costs

Most hotels are in Hosapete, 13 km away, at ₹2,500–6,000 a night, and they fill up during the Utsav; book three to four weeks ahead once dates are out. Kamalapur, closer to the ruins, has a few mid-range hotels and a high-end heritage resort. Guesthouses across the river in Virupapur Gaddi and Sanapur cost ₹1,500–4,000, but the river crossing stops at dusk, which matters for evening shows.

Crowds, etiquette and photography

Concert nights can draw tens of thousands, and parking and the roads into Hampi jam. Do not climb on monuments, and leave shoes outside temples. Photography is allowed at the sites, but drones need permission.

What to wear

January to March is 30–33°C by day and 16–20°C at night. Wear light cotton, a hat and comfortable shoes for the rocks, and carry a light layer for the evening shows.

Combining it

Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal, about 140 km away, make a two-day extension. Goa is about seven hours by road and Bengaluru an overnight train. See things to do in Hampi, where to stay in Hampi, the best time to visit Hampi and our February ideas.

Frequently asked questions

When is Hampi Utsav in 2027?
The Karnataka government announces Hampi Utsav dates each year, usually only a few weeks ahead. Recent editions have run for three days between January and March. Check Karnataka Tourism's website and local news from December onwards, and keep your Hampi plans flexible.
Is Hampi Utsav free?
Yes, the main stage programmes are free and open to all. Some add-ons, such as helicopter rides, are charged. Entry fees for ticketed monuments, such as the Vittala temple complex, still apply during the festival, so budget for those separately.
Where should I stay for Hampi Utsav?
Hosapete, 13 km from the ruins, has the most hotels, at about ₹2,500–6,000 a night. Kamalapur is closer but has fewer options. Riverside guesthouses across the Tungabhadra are cheaper, but the crossing stops at dusk, which makes the evening shows hard to reach.
How many days do I need in Hampi?
Three nights covers the main ruins at a comfortable pace, with sunrise on Matanga Hill and the evening programme if the Utsav is on. Add two nights for Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal if you enjoy temple architecture.
