Heritage bungalow or modern hotel?
Ooty's colonial-era bungalows and clubs have character, fireplaces and gardens, but plumbing and heating can be old. Modern hotels are warmer and more predictable. In winter, ask specifically about room heaters and round-the-clock hot water.
When should you book?
April to June and long weekends sell out early, often six to eight weeks ahead for the better hotels, and rates rise by 30–50%. From July to September and in February, you'll find good discounts and quieter roads.
What should families check?
Ask whether rooms are on one level, whether there's a restaurant on site, and how far the property is from the main road. Some cottages are reached by long flights of steps, which is hard work with small children or elderly parents.
If you're driving up, check that the hotel has parking. Many central properties don't, and street parking in summer is close to impossible.
Plan with things to do in Ooty and the best time to visit Ooty, or compare with where to stay in Coorg.
