Quick answer
Three days in Ooty: drive up from Coimbatore on day one for the Botanical Garden, spend day two on Doddabetta, a tea factory and Pykara Falls, and on day three see Coonoor's viewpoints before riding the Nilgiri toy train down its steepest section to Mettupalayam. Day 3
Coonoor and the toy train down
Morning: Check out and drive to Coonoor for Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose.
Afternoon: Board the Nilgiri Mountain Railway at Coonoor for the descent to Mettupalayam, the most dramatic stretch of the line; your driver meets you at the bottom.
Evening: Drive about an hour to Coimbatore for a late flight, or stay overnight.
Check the current timetable on IRCTC; the downhill train traditionally leaves Ooty in the early afternoon and reaches Mettupalayam around dusk.
Why ride the toy train downhill?
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway's most dramatic section is between Coonoor and Mettupalayam, where the rack-and-pinion track drops through tunnels, forest and viaducts. The famous uphill run starts at about 7 am at Mettupalayam, which usually means an extra night at the bottom of the hill. Riding down from Coonoor on the last afternoon covers the same stretch and saves that night.
Seats open 60 days ahead on IRCTC and sell out quickly from April to June and on long weekends. If you can't get them, ride the shorter Ooty–Coonoor section instead, which has more services.
How do you get there?
Coimbatore airport is well connected to most Indian metros and is about 3 hours by road from Ooty. Mettupalayam, the foot of the railway, is about an hour from the airport. Vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris need an e-pass, which your cab operator can usually arrange.
What does it cost?
Mid-range land costs start at about ₹11,000 per person on twin sharing, covering two nights in a 3★–4★ hotel with breakfast, a car with driver from Coimbatore and entry fees. Train tickets and flights are extra.
Pack layers even in summer. Ooty mornings are cool, and the drop to Mettupalayam takes you from about 2,200 m to 330 m, so expect a big jump in temperature.
