Quick answer

Two days in Alleppey centres on one overnight houseboat: board around noon, cruise through Kuttanad and Vembanad Lake until the boat anchors at about 5:30 pm, and sleep on board. On day two, check out by 9 am, take a canoe ride through narrow village canals and finish at Marari beach. Mid-range costs start around ₹9,000 per person.

The route

  1. Kochi
  2. Alleppey (houseboat)
  3. Marari
  4. Kochi

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Board the houseboat

    • Morning: Drive from Kochi to Alleppey, about 1.5–2 hours, reaching the houseboat jetty by noon.

    • Afternoon: A welcome drink and a Kerala lunch of fish curry, thoran and rice as the boat heads into Kuttanad's paddy country and across Vembanad Lake.

    • Evening: The boat anchors by about 5:30 pm. Tea and banana fritters on deck, a short village walk if you're moored near one, and dinner by lamplight.

    Stay: Houseboat

On many boats AC runs only overnight; premium boats run it through the day.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Canals and the coast

    • Morning: Sunrise from the deck, breakfast on board and check out by 9 am, then a two-hour canoe ride into the narrow canals.

    • Afternoon: Lunch at a toddy shop or resort, then Marari beach, 12 km north of town.

    • Evening: Drive back to Kochi, about 1.5 hours, or stay on at Marari.

An evening flight from Kochi after 6 pm keeps the day relaxed.

Is a single night on a houseboat enough?

For most people, yes. The houseboat is the highlight, and one night delivers its full rhythm: the afternoon cruise, the stillness after anchoring and the misty morning. A second night on board can feel repetitive, since boats follow similar routes and must anchor by about 5:30 pm. If you want more time, add a night at a lakeside resort or at Marari instead.

How do you choose the boat?

  • Bedrooms: couples should book a one-bedroom boat so the deck is yours alone.
  • AC hours: budget boats often run AC only overnight; premium boats run it all day.
  • Upper deck: an enclosed upper deck is worth paying for, especially in the monsoon or the April–May heat.
  • Classification: Kerala Tourism classifies houseboats; ask for the boat's name and certificate.

Rates for two in a one-bedroom boat run roughly ₹8,000–12,000 for deluxe, ₹13,000–20,000 for premium and ₹25,000 and up for luxury, including meals, with higher rates over Christmas and New Year.

Tell the operator about Jain or vegetarian needs when you book, not on board. The cook shops for your trip in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What time do Alleppey houseboats check in and check out?
Most overnight houseboats board around 12 noon and check out at about 9 am the next day, after breakfast. The boat cruises in the afternoon and must stop and anchor by about 5:30 pm under local rules, so it doesn't move at night. Arriving late means losing cruising time, not getting a later checkout.
Is an Alleppey houseboat safe for children?
Yes, with supervision. Boats have railings, life jackets and crew on board, and they anchor before dark. Keep small children away from open deck edges, ask for a boat with a closed upper deck, and confirm life jackets in children's sizes. The cook can make simple, less spicy food on request.
Can I start the houseboat from Kumarakom instead?
Yes. Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, also has houseboats, and its boats spend more time on the open lake. Alleppey offers more choice, more canal scenery and easier canoe add-ons. If you're coming from Thekkady or Munnar, Kumarakom is slightly closer, which helps you board on time.
