Quick answer

Indians need a Schengen visa for Switzerland, lodged at a VFS Global centre and decided by the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai. The fee is EUR 90 (about ₹9,200) plus VFS charges. Apply to Switzerland when it gets the most nights, which is common on Indian Europe tours, and book May–June slots by March.

Documents checklist

  • Schengen application form, completed and signed
  • Passport issued within 10 years, valid 3 months beyond return, plus old passports
  • Two 35 x 45 mm photographs on a white background
  • Cover letter and day-by-day itinerary showing Swiss nights as the longest stay
  • Bank statements for the last 3–6 months, stamped, with a balance that matches Swiss prices
  • ITR acknowledgements for the last 2–3 years
  • Leave letter and last 3 salary slips, or GST and business records
  • Travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 medical cover that explicitly includes Switzerland
  • Hotel bookings for every night and a refundable flight reservation
  • Tour vouchers, Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfraujoch bookings if already paid
  • Marriage certificate for honeymoon couples whose passports don't show the spouse's name

Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • Applying to France or Italy when Switzerland gets more nights; the visa can be refused as issued by the wrong state.
  • Finances that barely cover the package. A 7-night Swiss land trip starts around ₹1.3 lakh per person and officers check affordability.
  • Insurance that does not name Switzerland explicitly, since it is outside the EU.
  • Leaving May–June applications to April, when slots at metro VFS centres are scarce.

Why Switzerland is so often the right country

On most Indian Europe tours, Switzerland gets the most nights: Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt and a Jungfraujoch day fill four or five without trying. That makes Switzerland the competent state for many Paris–Switzerland–Italy itineraries, even when your flight lands in Paris or Milan. Switzerland is not in the EU but is fully in Schengen, so a Swiss visa covers all 29 countries. The common rules are on our Schengen visa guide.

Who handles Swiss visas in India?

Applications are lodged at VFS Global centres across India and decided by the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai, depending on where you live. Fingerprints taken for any Schengen visa in the last 59 months can usually be reused.

How long does it take in the honeymoon season?

Switzerland decides most tourist files within about 15 calendar days. The pressure point is February to May, when honeymooners and school-holiday families all target May and June. Book your VFS slot in February or early March for those months. Applications are accepted up to six months ahead and no later than 15 days before departure.

Swiss-specific points

  • Prices show in the file. Switzerland is expensive. A 7-night land package starts around ₹1.3 lakh per person, and officers check that your finances match. A balance that barely covers the package invites a refusal.
  • Paid plans help. A Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfraujoch tickets or tour vouchers show a real, paid itinerary.
  • Objection, not appeal. If refused, you can lodge a written objection with the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) within 30 days of receiving the decision. A fee applies, and a fresh, stronger application is often quicker.

Documents that decide the outcome

Bring stamped bank statements for three to six months, ITRs for two to three years, salary slips and a leave letter (or GST and business records), a day-by-day itinerary showing Swiss nights as the longest stay, hotel bookings for every night, and a refundable flight reservation. Insurance must give at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover in all Schengen states; check that the policy names Switzerland.

Honeymoon couples: attach the marriage certificate, especially if one passport still carries a maiden name or the spouse field is blank.

Frequently asked questions

Should I apply to Switzerland or France for a Paris and Switzerland trip?
Apply to the country where you spend more nights. Most Indian itineraries give Switzerland four or five nights and Paris three, which makes it a Swiss application. If the nights are exactly equal, apply to the country whose border you cross first, which is usually where your flight from India lands.
Is Switzerland in Schengen even though it is not in the EU?
Yes. Switzerland is a full Schengen member, so a Swiss-issued Schengen visa is valid in all 29 Schengen countries, and other countries' Schengen visas are valid in Switzerland. The currency is the Swiss franc, and some insurance policies list it separately because it is outside the EU, so check yours names it.
What can I do if my Swiss visa is refused?
You can lodge a written objection with the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) within 30 days of receiving the refusal; a fee applies. Many travellers instead reapply with a stronger file that addresses each reason on the refusal form, which is often faster before a fixed holiday date.
When should I apply for a Swiss visa for a May honeymoon?
Book your VFS slot in February or early March. Swiss decisions usually take about 15 calendar days, but April and May appointments at metro centres fill quickly with honeymoon and school-holiday demand. You can apply up to six months before departure and must apply at least 15 days before.
