Quick answer
For a first trip to Switzerland, split your stay between Lucerne (for Titlis, Rigi and the lake) and Interlaken (for the Jungfraujoch and Lauterbrunnen), then add Zermatt for the Matterhorn. Honeymooners should consider Grindelwald or car-free Wengen for mountain views from the room. Use Zurich only for a first or last night near the airport.
The best areas to stay in Switzerland
Lucerne
₹₹Best for: First-timers, families, Titlis and Rigi day trips
A walkable old town on a lake, an hour from Zurich Airport, with Titlis, Rigi, Pilatus and lake steamers all within easy reach.
Crowded with tour groups in summer, and lakefront rooms carry a large premium.
Doubles from ₹17,000 (CHF 155) a night
Interlaken
₹₹Best for: Jungfraujoch, families, Indian food
The hub of the Jungfrau railways between two lakes, with the most Indian restaurants of any Alpine town and the widest hotel choice.
The town itself is flat and commercial without big views, and it's packed in June.
Doubles from ₹16,500 (CHF 150) a night
Grindelwald
₹₹₹Best for: Honeymooners, mountain views, walkers
The Eiger's north face rises straight above the village, and the Eiger Express and First gondola start here.
About 35 minutes by train from Interlaken, with fewer budget restaurants and limited Indian food.
Doubles from ₹20,000 (CHF 180) a night
Wengen and Mürren (car-free)
₹₹₹Best for: Couples, quiet stays, views
Cliff-top villages above Lauterbrunnen with no cars and some of the best balcony views in the Alps.
Reached only by train or cable car, so luggage is a hassle. Dining is limited, and many hotels close in April–May and October–November.
Doubles from ₹19,000 (CHF 175) a night
Zermatt
₹₹₹Best for: Matterhorn, Glacier Express, skiing
A car-free village under the Matterhorn, with the Gornergrat railway and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at your door.
Far from the other bases — about 3h15 to Zurich — and the most expensive place to eat in this list.
Doubles from ₹22,000 (CHF 200) a night
Zurich
₹₹Best for: First or last night, city break, Rhine Falls
Ten minutes by train from the airport, with an old town, a lakefront and the Rhine Falls 50 minutes away.
An expensive city with no mountains on the doorstep; not a base for Alpine excursions.
Doubles from ₹16,500 (CHF 150) a night
₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.
How do you choose a base in Switzerland?
Switzerland is small and its trains are fast, so the question isn't "where's central" but "which excursions do I want, and how often do I want to move?" Most first-timers do best with two or three bases, two to three nights each. Changing hotels every night wastes the mornings, when mountain weather is clearest.
The classic split
- Lucerne, 2–3 nights: Titlis, Rigi or Pilatus, the lake and the old town.
- Interlaken or Grindelwald, 3 nights: Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen, First or Schilthorn.
- Zermatt, 1–2 nights: the Matterhorn. Add it if you're heading south or taking the Glacier Express.
Interlaken or Grindelwald?
Interlaken is better for families and first-timers: more hotels, more Indian restaurants, flat streets for prams and parents, and trains in every direction. Grindelwald is better for couples who want to wake up to the Eiger, at a higher price and with fewer evening options.
What about Lake Geneva?
Montreux and Lausanne make a good final base if you're flying out of Geneva, with Château de Chillon, the Lavaux vineyards and Gruyères nearby.
Practical tips for Indian travellers
- Rooms are small and twin beds are often pushed together. Families of four should book family rooms or apartments early.
- Air conditioning is rare, even in good hotels; summer nights are usually cool enough not to need it.
- City tax is charged per person per night and is often not in the online price.
- Luggage: send big bags ahead with the SBB luggage service rather than hauling them up to Wengen or Mürren.
