Quick answer
Spend day one walking the ghats from Assi to Dashashwamedh and watching the evening aarti, day two on a sunrise boat followed by Kashi Vishwanath and the old city lanes, and day three at Sarnath, BHU and Ramnagar Fort. Sleep on the ghats if you can. Mid-range land costs start around ₹12,000 per person.

Day-by-day plan

Day 1
Arrival, the ghats and the evening aarti
Morning: Arrive at Varanasi airport, about 25 km from the ghats, or at Varanasi Junction or Banaras station. Check in and rest.
Afternoon: Walk the ghats north from Assi to Dashashwamedh, about 4 km, with a chai stop near Kedar Ghat and a look at the palace on Darbhanga Ghat.
Evening: Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh at sunset, from the steps or a moored boat. Dinner in the Godowlia lanes.
Stay: Ghat-side hotel between Assi and Dashashwamedh
Cars can't reach most ghat-side hotels. Porters carry bags from the nearest road; agree their rate first.

Day 2
Sunrise boat, Kashi Vishwanath and the old city
Morning: Sunrise boat from Dashashwamedh north to Manikarnika and back south towards Assi, about 1.5–2 hours. Kachori-sabzi and jalebi for breakfast in the lanes.
Afternoon: Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath through the corridor, then rest through the heat or visit silk weavers in Madanpura.
Evening: Lassi near Godowlia, then a classical music recital near Assi or a rooftop dinner facing the river.
Stay: Same ghat-side hotel
Leave phones and bags at the hotel on temple day to skip the locker queue.

Day 3
Sarnath, BHU and Ramnagar Fort
Morning: Drive 10 km to Sarnath for the Dhamek Stupa, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and the Archaeological Museum, which is closed on Fridays.
Afternoon: Lunch, then the BHU campus, the New Vishwanath Temple and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple.
Evening: Ramnagar Fort before sunset, then an evening flight or overnight train onward.
If day three is a Friday, swap Sarnath with the day two afternoon.
Is three days enough for Varanasi?
Yes. Three days lets you see the river at its two best moments, dawn and dusk, on two different days, fit in Kashi Vishwanath without rushing, and add Sarnath, which most two-day trips skip. It also leaves the hot middle of each day free for rest, which matters for families with elders.
How this plan works
The plan stays on the ghats for the first two nights so you can walk to the aarti and the dawn boat without a drive. Day three moves out to Sarnath and the south of the city, then hands you to an evening flight or train. The mid-range cost of about ₹12,000 per person assumes a 4-star or heritage ghat-side room on twin sharing, a private car for airport transfers and day three, a shared sunrise boat, a guide for Sarnath, and entry fees. It excludes flights, trains and meals.
Adjust it for your dates
- Dev Deepawali week: add a night and book your boat months ahead; prices rise several times over.
- Monsoon (August–September): boats may be suspended and lower ghats flooded. Swap the boat for a rooftop aarti view and spend more time at Sarnath.
- Travelling with elders: use a boat instead of the day one ghat walk, and an e-rickshaw in the lanes.
Aarti crowds peak on weekends and festival days. A seat on a moored boat in front of Dashashwamedh is calmer than the steps.
