Our verdict

Choose Varanasi for an intense, ancient city of ghats, Kashi Vishwanath, cremation grounds and the grand evening Ganga aarti, best from October to March; 3 nights start around ₹10,000 per person. Choose Rishikesh for a calmer river town with yoga, rafting and riverside walks, from about ₹8,000. For spiritual depth, pick Varanasi; for rest and activity, Rishikesh.

Which one is for you?

Choose Varanasi if…

  • You want the full ritual experience: a dawn boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath darshan and the evening aarti
  • You're travelling with parents on a pilgrimage, perhaps adding Prayagraj or Ayodhya
  • Street food and old-city walks interest you more than outdoor sport
  • You'd like to see Dev Deepawali, when the ghats are lit with lamps in November

Choose Rishikesh if…

  • You want a yoga course, a retreat or quiet riverside rest
  • Rafting, camping or bungee is part of the plan
  • You prefer a calmer, cleaner town over dense city lanes
  • You're driving from Delhi for a long weekend

Two Ganga towns, two moods

Both are holy towns on the Ganga, both hold an evening aarti, and both are easy for vegetarians. Yet they feel opposite. Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities: a crescent of more than 80 ghats, narrow lanes, cremation fires at Manikarnika that burn day and night, and crowds of pilgrims. Rishikesh is a small, green town in the foothills, where the river runs fast and clear and the day revolves around yoga classes, cafes and rafting.

Getting there and cost

Varanasi is about 1 hour 20 minutes by air from Delhi, with non-stop flights from Mumbai, Bengaluru and other metros; the Vande Bharat from Delhi takes about eight hours. A 3-night trip with a 3-star hotel near the ghats, a dawn boat ride, a guided temple walk and a Sarnath half-day starts around ₹10,000 per person, twin sharing.

Rishikesh is a 5–6 hour drive from Delhi, or fly to Dehradun and drive 35 km. Three nights with a hotel or riverside camp and one rafting session start around ₹8,000. See the Varanasi trip cost and Rishikesh trip cost.

The rituals compared

Varanasi's Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is a large, choreographed ceremony led by several priests. Watch it from a boat for the best view, and arrive early in season. The dawn boat ride past the ghats is the other essential. Kashi Vishwanath, now reached through a wide corridor from the river, has long queues; paid sugam darshan tickets are available online. See things to do in Varanasi.

Rishikesh's aarti at Parmarth Niketan and Triveni Ghat is smaller and more participatory. The draw here is time: an ashram stay, a week of yoga, or simply walking the riverbank towards Ram Jhula.

When to go

Varanasi is best from October to March, and Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima in November is its most spectacular, and most crowded, night. May and June are brutal at 40–45°C, and the monsoon floods the lower ghats, stopping boats for weeks. Rishikesh is best from September to November and February to April; rafting closes in the monsoon. Read when to visit Varanasi.

The honest trade-offs

Varanasi is intense. Lanes are crowded, touts and self-appointed guides approach constantly, traffic to the ghats is slow, and the cremation ghats are not for everyone. Choose a hotel near Assi or Dashashwamedh so you can walk to the river. Rishikesh is easier but more commercial than its image suggests, and its main areas ban meat and alcohol.

Who should go where

Parents on a pilgrimage, history lovers and food-focused travellers should choose Varanasi. Yoga seekers, young groups and families wanting outdoor time should choose Rishikesh.

Frequently asked questions

Is Varanasi or Rishikesh better for elderly parents?
For a pilgrimage, Varanasi, but plan carefully. Book a hotel near the ghats to limit walking, use a boat to see the aarti instead of standing in crowds, and consider paid sugam darshan at Kashi Vishwanath. Rishikesh is calmer and less tiring, with shorter walks and cleaner surroundings, but has fewer major temples.
What time is the Ganga aarti in Varanasi and Rishikesh?
Both are held every evening around sunset, roughly 6 pm in winter and closer to 7 pm in summer, with a morning aarti as well. In Varanasi, the main one is at Dashashwamedh Ghat and lasts about 45 minutes. In Rishikesh, Parmarth Niketan and Triveni Ghat hold the best-known ceremonies. Arrive 30–45 minutes early in peak season.
How many days are enough for Varanasi?
Two full days cover the essentials: a dawn boat ride, a ghat walk, Kashi Vishwanath, the evening aarti and a half-day at Sarnath. Three nights lets you slow down, explore the old-city food lanes and see the aarti from both a boat and the ghats.
Is Rishikesh good for a first yoga retreat?
Yes. Rishikesh has hundreds of yoga schools and ashrams, with drop-in classes, week-long retreats and 200-hour teacher-training courses. Retreats typically include accommodation, sattvic meals and two sessions a day. Check reviews and teacher credentials, and book ahead for March, when the International Yoga Festival draws large numbers.
Can I combine Varanasi and Rishikesh in one trip?
They are about 850 km apart, so you'd fly or take a train via Delhi. A better plan is to pair Varanasi with Prayagraj, Ayodhya or Bodh Gaya, and Rishikesh with Haridwar or Mussoorie. With 7–8 nights, though, Varanasi plus Rishikesh and Haridwar works well as a Ganga-focused trip.
