Our verdict

Choose Rishikesh for a 2–3 night break from Delhi with river rafting, yoga, the Ganga aarti and riverside camps; 3 nights start around ₹8,000 per person. Choose Manali for snow, cooler weather, paragliding and mountain views, with 4 nights from about ₹12,000. In the May–June heat, Manali wins; in winter, Rishikesh is the easier and milder trip.

Which one is for you?

Choose Rishikesh if…

  • You have a long weekend and want to arrive in 5–6 hours from Delhi
  • River rafting, bungee or a riverside camp is the main plan
  • Yoga, meditation or the evening Ganga aarti matter to you
  • You're travelling between October and March and want mild days rather than snow

Choose Manali if…

  • You want snow, cool air or mountain views above 2,000 m
  • It's May or June and Rishikesh's 38–40°C heat is too much
  • You'd like paragliding, skiing or a trek such as Hampta Pass
  • You want evenings in cafes and bars rather than an alcohol-free town

Ganga town or mountain town?

Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills, at only about 340 m. It's a yoga and pilgrimage town with the best-known white-water rafting near Delhi. Manali is a full mountain resort at about 2,050 m in the Kullu valley, with snow, pine forests and adventure sports. They suit different seasons and different groups.

Distance and cost

Rishikesh is about 240 km from Delhi, 5–6 hours by road. Trains reach Haridwar, 25 km away, or Yog Nagari Rishikesh station, and Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport is about 35 km away, useful from Mumbai or Bengaluru. Two or three nights is enough. A 3-night trip with a riverside camp or 3-star hotel and one rafting session starts around ₹8,000 per person, twin sharing.

Manali is about 540 km away, usually an overnight Volvo of 12–14 hours. You need at least four nights. A 4-night package with Volvo tickets, hotel and local sightseeing starts around ₹12,000. See the Manali trip cost and Rishikesh trip cost.

Adventure compared

Rishikesh rafting runs from roughly mid-September to June and closes during the monsoon. The common stretches are Shivpuri to Rishikesh (about 16 km, typically ₹600–1,000 per person) and Marine Drive to Rishikesh (about 24 km, ₹1,000–1,500). An 83 m bungee jump at Mohan Chatti, ziplines and cliff jumping add to it. See things to do in Rishikesh.

Manali offers paragliding at Solang (about ₹2,500–4,500), skiing and snow activities in January and February, rafting near Kullu in summer, and treks such as Hampta Pass. If you want snow, it has to be Manali; Rishikesh never gets any.

Weather decides a lot

Rishikesh is pleasant from October to March, but April to June is hot, often 38–40°C. That is exactly when Manali, at 20–25°C by day, is at its busiest. In December and January, Rishikesh's mild days of around 20°C are easier for older travellers than Manali's sub-zero nights. Check when to visit Rishikesh.

The honest trade-offs

Rishikesh's main areas are vegetarian and alcohol-free by local rule, which suits families and pilgrims but not every group of friends. Riverside camps vary widely in safety and hygiene, so check recent reviews and life-jacket standards before you book. Manali's issues are the long journey, traffic jams to Solang and the Atal Tunnel, and monsoon landslides on the highway in July and August.

Who should go where

Pick Rishikesh for a short break, a yoga retreat or an adventure weekend between October and June. Pick Manali for snow, a summer escape from the plains, or a longer mountain holiday with friends or as a couple.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rishikesh or Manali better for a weekend from Delhi?
Rishikesh. It's about 240 km and 5–6 hours from Delhi, so you can leave on Friday evening or Saturday morning and still raft, watch the aarti and return by Sunday night. Manali is 12–14 hours away by overnight bus and needs at least four nights to be worthwhile.
When is river rafting open in Rishikesh?
Rafting usually runs from mid-September to the end of June and is suspended during the monsoon, roughly July to mid-September, when the Ganga is high and fast. The best months are October to April. Exact opening and closing dates are set each year by the Uttarakhand authorities.
Can I drink alcohol in Rishikesh?
Not in the main town. Rishikesh's core areas, including Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula and Tapovan, are officially vegetarian and alcohol-free, and the rule is enforced. Some camps and hotels outside the municipal area serve alcohol. If drinks and nightlife matter to your group, Manali is the better choice.
Which is better for a group of friends, Rishikesh or Manali?
For a short adventure weekend, Rishikesh: rafting, bungee, cliff jumping and riverside camps in 2–3 nights at about ₹8,000 per person. For a longer trip with snow, cafes, bars and paragliding, Manali, with four nights or more from about ₹12,000 per person.
Can I combine Rishikesh and Manali in one trip?
It's possible but not efficient. The two are about 450 km apart by mountain roads, a full day of driving. With a week, it's better to pair Rishikesh with Mussoorie or Haridwar, or Manali with Kasol or Shimla, and keep the other for a separate trip.
