Our verdict
Choose Gulmarg for deeper, more reliable snow, the Gondola to about 3,980 m and India's best skiing, usually as 1–2 nights on a 5-night Kashmir trip from about ₹17,000 per person. Choose Manali for an overland trip from Delhi with more budget hotels, paragliding, nightlife and easy add-ons like Kasol, with 4 nights from about ₹12,000. Skiers should pick Gulmarg.

Snow in two very different places
Gulmarg is a single high meadow at about 2,650 m in the Pir Panjal range, 50 km from Srinagar. It exists for snow and skiing, with a small cluster of hotels and little else. Manali is a full hill town at about 2,050 m with hundreds of hotels, a cafe scene and adventure sports, where snow is a day trip to Solang or Sissu, or to Rohtang in early summer.
How reliable is the snow?
Gulmarg wins clearly. From late December to early March it usually sits under deep snow, and the second phase of the Gulmarg Gondola climbs to about 3,980 m on Apharwat, giving skiers long runs and powder. Tickets for both phases together cost roughly ₹1,700–2,000 at the time of review, booked online, and queues are long in peak weeks.
In Manali, snow in town depends on the year. Solang Valley, about 14 km away, and Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel are your best bets from late December to February. Rohtang keeps snow into June but needs an online permit and is shut in winter.
Getting there and cost
Gulmarg is usually part of a 5-night Kashmir trip from about ₹17,000 per person, twin sharing, with one or two nights in Gulmarg and the rest in Srinagar and Pahalgam. Gulmarg's hotels are limited and pricey in snow season, so many travellers day-trip from Srinagar instead. Return flights from Delhi to Srinagar typically cost ₹7,000–14,000. See the Kashmir trip cost.
Manali is usually a 4-night trip by overnight Volvo from Delhi, from about ₹12,000 per person with hotel and local sightseeing. Snow-day costs add up: boot and jacket rental, snow scooters and ropeway tickets at Solang. See the Manali trip cost.
The honest trade-offs
Gulmarg's pony operators and freelance guides can be pushy, so agree the price and destination before you set off. Prepaid SIMs from other states don't work in Kashmir, roads close briefly after heavy snowfall, and security advisories should be checked before booking. There's no nightlife at all.
Manali's problem is volume. Solang and the Atal Tunnel road can jam for hours, prices for snow activities are inconsistent, and the overnight bus is tiring. Monsoon landslides make July and August a poor time.
Who should go where
Choose Gulmarg for skiing, near-certain snow and a calmer, more scenic setting, especially in January and February. Choose Manali for budget travel by road, a group trip with nightlife, or a summer mountain break combined with Kasol or Sissu. See when to visit Gulmarg and things to do in Manali.
