How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Travel in March, September or November; hotel rates are typically 20–40% below the May–June peak.
- Spend one night on a houseboat, not all five. Deluxe houseboats cost more than an equivalent hotel and are less practical for early starts.
- Two people do not need an Innova; a sedan saves roughly ₹4,000–6,000 over six days.
- Book Gulmarg Gondola tickets online yourself; touts and some agents add a markup.
- Do Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar rather than paying for an extra hotel night there.
- Book flights six to eight weeks ahead for April–June and late December; last-minute Delhi–Srinagar fares can double.
How much does a Kashmir trip cost?
For five nights, most Indian travellers spend ₹17,000–35,000 per person on the ground, twin sharing, before flights. Three things move the number most: hotel class, the vehicle you hire, and the season.
| Tier | Land cost from | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ₹17,000 | 2★–3★ hotels, standard houseboat, small car |
| Mid-range | ₹27,000 | 3★–4★ hotels, deluxe houseboat, sedan or Innova |
| Luxury | ₹62,000 | 5★ hotels, premium houseboat, Innova Crysta |
All three tiers assume the classic loop of three nights in Srinagar, one in Gulmarg and one in Pahalgam, with breakfast and dinner included. Our 6-day Kashmir route in itineraries follows the same plan.
What costs extra on the ground?
Most quotes leave out the things you pay for locally, and these add up:
- Gulmarg Gondola: about ₹700–800 for Phase 1 and ₹900–1,000 for Phase 2 per person in 2026.
- Union taxis: in Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg, local unions run sightseeing. Your Srinagar cab waits while you hire their vehicles or ponies at posted rates.
- Ponies, sledges and shikaras: rates are fixed by local authorities, but touts quote high. Agree the price and route before you start.
Budget ₹4,000–7,000 per person for these on a five-night trip.
How does the season change the price?
April to June and the Christmas–New Year week are the dearest, with hotels and houseboats 30–50% above low-season rates and flights at their highest. November, February and early March are the cheapest, with the trade-off of cold nights and occasional snow closures. Check the best time to visit Kashmir before fixing dates.
How do you get there, and what does it cost?
Flying is simplest: Delhi to Srinagar takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and return fares usually run ₹8,000–15,000 outside peak weeks. Rail is now an option too: trains run from Delhi to Jammu or Katra, and from Katra to Srinagar across the Chenab bridge in about 3 hours. By road, Delhi to Srinagar is about 800 km, best split over two days.
Your phone matters. Prepaid SIMs from other states have long been blocked in Jammu and Kashmir, while postpaid connections work. Check with your operator before you travel.
