Our verdict
Choose Shimla for a shorter, easier trip: it's 7–8 hours from Delhi, works in 2–3 nights and suits older parents, with 3 nights from about ₹9,000 per person. Choose Manali if you want snow, adventure and bigger mountain views and can spare four nights or more; land packages start around ₹12,000 per person. For first-time snow, Manali is the better bet.

Manali or Shimla in one line
Shimla is the easier, shorter trip with heritage charm. Manali is the bigger mountain experience with snow and adventure, but it costs more time to reach.
Getting there and how long you need
Shimla is about 350 km from Delhi, a 7–8 hour drive, or 3–4 hours from Chandigarh airport on the four-lane highway. The Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line, takes five to six hours for 96 km; ride it one way for the views, not both. Two or three nights is enough.
Manali is about 540 km from Delhi. Most people take an overnight Volvo (12–14 hours, roughly ₹1,200–2,500 one way) or drive with a stop. Kullu-Bhuntar airport is 50 km away, but flights are few, small and often cancelled in bad weather. You need four nights for Manali, five if you add Kasol or Sissu.
What does each cost?
A 3-night Shimla trip with a car from Delhi or Chandigarh and a 3-star hotel starts at about ₹9,000 per person, twin sharing. A 4-night Manali package with Volvo tickets, hotel and local sightseeing starts at about ₹12,000. Combine them in a 5-night Shimla–Manali circuit from about ₹15,000 per person. Add-ons are where Manali gets expensive: snow-gear rental, paragliding at Solang (about ₹2,500–4,500 depending on flight length) and the Rohtang trip in summer. See the Manali trip cost and Shimla trip cost pages for detail.
Snow: the deciding factor for many
If you want near-certain snow in January or February, choose Manali. Solang Valley and Sissu, just beyond the 9 km Atal Tunnel, usually have snow cover all winter. Shimla town gets snowfall only on some days in some years; Kufri (16 km) and Narkanda (65 km) are better bets. In summer, Rohtang Pass (3,978 m) above Manali keeps snow into June, but it needs an online permit, has daily vehicle caps and is usually closed on Tuesdays.
The honest trade-offs
Shimla's Mall Road and Ridge are crowded from April to June, parking is scarce, and water shortages hit some hotels in May. Manali's problem is traffic: the road to Solang and the Atal Tunnel can jam for hours on weekends, and the July–August monsoon brings landslides on the Kiratpur–Manali highway. Avoid both in the monsoon if you can.
For a family with grandparents, Shimla's short transfers matter more than Manali's views. For couples and friends, Manali is usually worth the extra night of travel. See things to do in Manali, or compare more hill pairs on our comparison hub.
