When is Shimla at its best?

Shimla (about 2,200 m) is the closest proper hill station to Delhi and Chandigarh, so crowd timing matters as much as weather. Weekends in May and June, and the Christmas week, bring heavy traffic from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

March to June: escape-the-heat season

Rhododendrons flower in March and April, and May–June days sit in the low-to-mid 20s. This is peak demand: the Mall is packed after 5 pm and in a dry year some hotels ration water. Book the toy train from Kalka at least a few weeks ahead.

July to September: the monsoon

Shimla gets around 400 mm of rain in July alone. Slides on the Kalka–Shimla highway and the toy train line are common, and in August 2023 a landslide at Summer Hill killed around 20 people. Views are mostly fog. Hotels discount, but a short break is a gamble.

October to mid-December: the clear season

Air washed clean by the monsoon gives the best Himalayan views from the Ridge, Jakhoo and Narkanda. October is pleasant; November evenings are cold; early December is quiet before the Christmas rush.

Late December to February: snow season

Shimla town sees a few snowfalls most winters, usually between late December and early February, though some years are thin. Kufri and Narkanda get more. Roads beyond Dhalli can close for a day or two after heavy snow, and the Ridge becomes the place to be for Christmas and New Year.

If snow is the goal, base yourself at Narkanda or Kufri rather than in town, and keep dates flexible. A forecast a week out beats any calendar guess.

Shimla or Manali?

Shimla is easier: five hours by road from Chandigarh, a heritage train, and a walkable colonial centre. Manali is higher and snowier, with more adventure options. Compare with the best time to visit Manali, then plan with things to do in Shimla and where to stay in Shimla. For packaged options, see our India tour packages.

Frequently asked questions

When does it snow in Shimla?
Shimla town usually gets its first snow between late December and mid-January, with more spells into February. Some winters bring only a light dusting. Kufri, 16 km away, and Narkanda, 65 km away, are higher and more reliable for snow. Check forecasts a week before travel rather than booking blindly for the New Year week.
Is Shimla good to visit in summer?
Yes. April to June is Shimla's main season, with days around 19–24°C when Delhi is above 40°C. Expect crowds, traffic queues at Shoghi and on the Mall, and higher hotel rates on weekends. Travelling midweek and staying in Chhota Shimla or Mashobra instead of on the Mall makes summer much more pleasant.
Is it safe to visit Shimla in the monsoon?
July and August are the riskiest months. Heavy rain causes landslides on the Kalka–Shimla highway and occasionally suspends the toy train. The town is generally fine, but travel days can be slow or blocked. If you go, avoid night drives, keep a buffer day and check Himachal Police road updates before leaving.
Shimla or Manali in December: which is better?
Manali has a better chance of snow in December, especially at Solang, but is a longer journey and sees closures beyond Solang after storms. Shimla is easier to reach and has the Christmas atmosphere on the Ridge, though snow before the last week of December is uncommon. For guaranteed snow, neither is certain; January is safer.
