When should you go to Dharamshala?

Dharamshala sits on a steep spur: Lower Dharamshala at about 1,450 m, McLeodganj at about 2,000 m and the Triund ridge at 2,850 m. The table uses the lower town; McLeodganj runs 3–4°C cooler.

March to June

Spring is excellent. The Dhauladhar range still carries snow, rhododendrons bloom, and the Triund trail clears of snow, usually by April. May and June bring school-holiday crowds from Punjab and Delhi, and Temple Road jams up in the evenings.

July to mid-September

The monsoon here is serious. Dharamshala gets roughly 2,900 mm of rain a year, most of it in July and August. Trails turn slippery and leech-ridden, Triund is unsafe on many days and views disappear. Fine for a café-and-books retreat, not much else.

Late September to December

Post-monsoon air is the clearest of the year. October and November are the best months for Triund and photography. Around 10 December the International Himalayan Festival brings performances to McLeodganj.

January and February

Cold and often sunny, with snow on the peaks and the odd snowfall in McLeodganj itself. Tibetan Losar falls in February or March, expected around early February in 2027, when monasteries hold prayers and dances.

The Dalai Lama's public teachings at the Tsuglagkhang fill hotels in days. The schedule appears on his official website; register with photo ID at the Branch Security Office in McLeodganj before the teaching starts.

How do you get there from Delhi?

Overnight Volvo buses take 10–12 hours to McLeodganj or Lower Dharamshala. Flights land at Gaggal (Kangra) airport, about 15 km from Lower Dharamshala, but schedules are thin and cancellations common in poor weather. By train, go to Pathankot and drive about 3 hours.

Plan your days with things to do in Dharamshala, pick a base from where to stay in Dharamshala, and compare with the best time to visit Manali. For festival dates across India, see festivals.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for the Triund trek?
October and November are the best months for Triund: dry trails, clear views of the Dhauladhar and cool but manageable nights. April to early June is the second window, busier and warmer. Avoid July and August, when heavy rain makes the trail slippery and dangerous, and December to February, when snow can make the upper section icy.
Does it snow in McLeodganj?
McLeodganj gets light snow on a few days in most winters, usually between late December and February, but it rarely lasts. The Dhauladhar peaks directly above town are snow-covered from about December to April, which gives the classic view. For reliable snow underfoot, walk up towards Triund or travel to Manali instead.
Is Dharamshala worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only if you want a quiet, rain-soaked stay. July and August each bring 800–900 mm of rain, so trails close, views disappear and landslides slow the roads. Hotels discount heavily and cafés stay open. For sightseeing, treks or children, wait until late September or October, when the air is at its clearest.
How many days do you need in Dharamshala?
Three days covers McLeodganj, the Tsuglagkhang, Bhagsu and Dharamkot, a Triund day hike and a half day at Norbulingka or Kangra Fort. Add a day for Bir Billing paragliding, about two hours away. If you are travelling by overnight Volvo from Delhi, budget an easy first morning after the 10–12 hour journey.
