Where should you stay in Dharamshala?
Most visitors are really going to McLeodganj, the Tibetan town about 10 km above Lower Dharamshala. Staying there puts the Dalai Lama's temple, the Tibet Museum, the cafés of Jogiwara Road and the Triund trailhead within walking distance. The trade-off is evening traffic and small rooms.
How do the areas compare?
- McLeodganj: the default for a short trip. Choose a hotel off Temple Road for quieter nights.
- Bhagsu and Dharamkot: for backpackers, yoga courses and long stays. Dharamkot is car-free in parts, so expect to walk up with your bag.
- Naddi: for couples who want views of the Dhauladhar from the balcony and do not mind taxis.
- Lower Dharamshala: for early buses, flights from Gaggal airport, cricket at the HPCA stadium or a budget stay.
- Sidhpur and Norbulingka: for calm, families and anyone interested in Tibetan arts.
What should you check before booking?
Ask how the hotel is reached. Many McLeodganj and Dharamkot properties sit up steps or narrow lanes. Check for parking if you are driving, heating from December to February, and how the hotel handles power cuts. During monsoon months, ask about damp in rooms.
When should you book early?
Around Dalai Lama teachings, Losar, the long weekends of May and June, and Christmas–New Year. Teaching dates are published on his official website.
The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway links the lower town with McLeodganj in a few minutes, which makes a Lower Dharamshala stay more practical than it used to be.
Check timing on the best time to visit Dharamshala, plan your days with things to do in Dharamshala, see the 3-day plan in itineraries, and compare with where to stay in Manali.
