Quick answer
Stay on or near Mall Road for your first visit: you can walk to the lake, the temple and the restaurants. If you want calm, try the Ayarpatta slopes above town, the forest lodges at Pangot, or lakeside Bhimtal. For Himalayan views, spend at least one night in Mukteshwar, about 50 km away. In May and June, book a hotel with parking.

Where should you stay in Nainital?
For a first trip, stay on or near Mall Road. You'll walk to everything that matters in town and avoid the daily scramble for parking. For a second night, or a calmer trip, the region around Nainital has better options than the town itself.
| Area | Distance from the lake | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mall Road | On it | First-timers | ₹₹ |
| Ayarpatta slopes | 1–2 km | Couples, heritage | ₹₹ |
| Pangot | About 15 km | Birding, quiet | ₹₹ |
| Bhimtal | About 22 km | Families, calm | ₹₹ |
| Sattal and Naukuchiatal | 20–25 km | Activities, couples | ₹₹₹ |
| Mukteshwar | About 50 km | Himalayan views | ₹₹ |
Lake view or mountain view?
Nainital's rooms look over the lake, not the Himalaya. The ridges around the town block the snow peaks. If waking up to Nanda Devi and Trishul matters to you, book at least one night in Mukteshwar, or a ridge property near Pangot.
What to check before booking
- Parking. On peak weekends police often stop private cars at outer lots and run shuttles. A hotel with its own parking saves hours.
- Steps. Many Mall Road hotels are reached by steep lanes. Ask if a car can drop you at the door.
- Heating. Older properties have no central heating. In winter, ask for a heater.
- Season. May, June, Diwali and Christmas–New Year are the most expensive. Rates can double.
Splitting your stay between Mall Road and Mukteshwar gives you both the lake and the mountains.
