Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrive in Nainital, lake and Mall Road

    • Morning: Take the morning train from Delhi to Kathgodam, about 6 hours, or fly to Pantnagar, about 70 km from Nainital.

    • Afternoon: Drive 35 km (1.5 hours) up to Nainital. Check in, then go boating on Naini Lake and visit the Naina Devi temple.

    • Evening: Walk Mall Road from Mallital to Tallital, with a stop at the Tibetan market.

    Stay: Mallital or Mall Road

On peak weekends cars may be stopped at outer parking lots. Ask your hotel about parking and shuttle arrangements in advance.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Snow View, Naina Peak and Hanuman Garhi

    • Morning: Ropeway to Snow View by 9 am for the mountain view, then hike towards Naina Peak (about 2,615 m) for the widest panorama near town.

    • Afternoon: Lunch in town. Eco Cave Gardens if you have children; otherwise rest.

    • Evening: Drive 3 km down to Hanuman Garhi for sunset over the plains.

    Stay: Mallital or Mall Road

If Naina Peak is too long, walk or take a pony to Tiffin Top instead.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Kainchi Dham and Mukteshwar

    • Morning: Leave by 7.30 am for Kainchi Dham, about 17 km away, before the crowds build.

    • Afternoon: Drive on to Mukteshwar, about 2 hours. Walk to Chauli ki Jali and the Mukteshwar Dham temple.

    • Evening: Sunset from the temple ridge; dinner at your homestay or resort.

    Stay: Mukteshwar

Mukteshwar is cold after dark even in May. Pack a proper jacket.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Mukteshwar sunrise, Bhimtal and departure

    • Morning: Watch the Himalayan skyline at sunrise, then drive about 2 hours to Bhimtal.

    • Afternoon: Boating on Bhimtal and a short stop at Sattal or Naukuchiatal.

    • Evening: Drive 22 km to Kathgodam for an evening train, or about 7–8 hours back to Delhi by road.

Leave buffer time for the Kathgodam train: the Bhimtal–Kathgodam road jams on Sundays.

Why split the stay between Nainital and Mukteshwar?

Nainital is pleasant but crowded, and its views are partly blocked by the ridges around the lake. Mukteshwar, at about 2,280 m and 50 km away, gives you the open Himalayan skyline Kumaon is known for, with far less traffic. One night there changes the trip. Ending at Bhimtal keeps you close to Kathgodam for the journey home.

How do you get to Nainital?

  • Train: Delhi to Kathgodam takes about 6 hours, then a 35-km drive (1.5 hours) up the hill.
  • Air: Pantnagar is about 70 km from Nainital and has limited flights.
  • Road: Delhi to Nainital is about 300 km and 7–8 hours.

What does this itinerary cost?

From about ₹14,000 per person on land, twin sharing, with three nights in 3-star hotels or good homestays, a car with driver from Kathgodam for all four days, and boating. Train or flight fares, ropeway tickets and meals beyond breakfast are extra. May–June and Christmas push rates up by 30–50%.

Changes for different travellers

  • Senior citizens: swap Naina Peak for Snow View and the Mall. Book a Mukteshwar stay with car access to the door.
  • Couples: replace the second Nainital night with a lakeside stay at Bhimtal.
  • Wildlife fans: add two nights at Jim Corbett, about 65 km from Nainital. See the 3-day Corbett itinerary.

October to mid-November gives the clearest mountain views from Snow View and Mukteshwar.

Frequently asked questions

Is four days too long for Nainital?
Not if you use the region. Nainital itself needs about two days. The other two let you see Mukteshwar's Himalayan views, Kainchi Dham, Bhimtal and Sattal, which are quieter than the main lake and make the trip feel less crowded.
What is the nearest railway station to Nainital?
Kathgodam, about 35 km away and 1.5 hours by road. Daytime and overnight trains connect it to Delhi, and taxis wait outside the station. In peak season, pre-book a car through your hotel to avoid bargaining.
Can I add Jim Corbett to this itinerary?
Yes. Corbett's base, Ramnagar, is about 65 km from Nainital. Add two nights and three safaris after Day 4, then return to Delhi from Ramnagar by road or train. Book safari permits about 45 days ahead.
