Quick answer

The best time to visit Ladakh is June to September, when Leh is 20–25°C by day, both the Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways are open and camps at Nubra and Pangong are running. May and early October are quieter and cheaper but colder. From November to March Ladakh is a flights-only, sub-zero destination for specialists.

When should you go to Ladakh?

Ladakh is a high-altitude desert. Leh sits at about 3,500 m and gets under 100 mm of rain a year, so the monsoon that shuts down Himachal barely touches it. Temperature and road access decide the season, not rain.

June to September: the main season

All roads are open, every camp at Pangong Tso and Hunder is running, and days are warm enough for a T-shirt in Leh. June and the first half of July are the busiest, and late-booked flights from Delhi can cost ₹20,000 or more return. August can bring cloudbursts and landslides on the highways, especially on the Himachal side, though flights are unaffected. September is the pick: clear skies, thinner crowds and the Ladakh Festival in Leh.

May and October: the shoulder months

In May, Pangong is still partly frozen and nights drop below zero. The Manali–Leh road usually opens in mid-to-late May (it reopened around 12–13 May in 2026), and the Srinagar route via Zojila opens a little earlier with time-bound, one-way traffic at first. By mid-October many lakeside camps close and nights fall to –5°C, but the light is superb and Leh hotels discount.

November to April: winter Ladakh

Flights only. Leh drops to –14°C at night in January and many hotels shut. People come for the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar, snow leopard tours and winter festivals. It is not for first-timers or anyone with heart or lung conditions.

Whatever the month, treat your first 36–48 hours in Leh as rest. Altitude sickness ignores the calendar. Our 7-day plan in itineraries builds this in.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best month to visit Ladakh?
September suits most travellers best. Both highways are open, skies are clear, the summer rush has eased and Leh hotels start to discount. June and July are equally good for weather but busier and dearer, especially flights. May and early October work if you can handle sub-zero nights and fewer open camps.
Do Indians need a permit to visit Ladakh in 2026?
Indian citizens do not need a permit for Leh town. For Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and other protected areas you register and pay an environment fee plus a small daily wildlife fee through the official LAHDC Leh portal, roughly ₹500–700 per person for a week. The rules have changed several times since 2021, so check the portal before you travel.
Can I visit Ladakh in winter?
Yes, but only by air into Leh, and only if you are fit and prepared for –15°C nights. Many hotels close, water pipes freeze and some monasteries keep short hours. Winter suits the Chadar trek, snow leopard tours and festival photography. It is a poor choice for families, senior citizens or anyone visiting Ladakh for the first time.
Is August a safe time to go to Ladakh?
Ladakh itself stays dry in August, so Leh, Nubra and Pangong are generally fine. The risk lies on the highways: cloudbursts and landslides on the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh routes can close roads for a day or more. If you fly in and out of Leh, August is a reasonable choice; if you drive, keep two buffer days.
When does Pangong Lake freeze?
Pangong Tso freezes from roughly late December to March, when it is solid enough that locals walk on it. The ice breaks up through April and early May. Lakeside camps generally run from May to mid-October; outside that window you visit Pangong as a long day trip from Leh or stay in a basic heated homestay.
