Quick answer
Take the Kalka Shatabdi and the toy train up on day one, spend day two on Jakhoo, Christ Church, the Viceregal Lodge and the Mall, and use day three for Kufri and Mashobra before heading down to Kalka for the evening train to Delhi. Mid-range land costs start at about ₹10,000 per person, twin sharing.

Evening: Arrive by early evening; stroll the Ridge and the Mall.
Stay: Mall Road area or Chhota Shimla
Book both trains together on IRCTC so the connection works; leave buffer in case the Shatabdi runs late.

Prefer the road both ways? Overnight Volvos leave Shimla for Delhi in the evening and save a hotel night.
Why does this plan work?
Shimla is the easiest hill station to reach from Delhi, and three days is enough to see it properly without feeling rushed. Going up by toy train turns travel into part of the holiday; going down by road saves time on the last day. Two nights in one hotel means no repacking.
Where should you stay?
Stay near the Mall or in Chhota Shimla, so the heritage core is walkable. Hotels further out in Mashobra or Kufri are quieter but need a taxi for every outing. See where to stay in Shimla for areas and prices.
How does it change by season?
- March to June: run as written; book trains and hotels early for May and June weekends.
- July and August: heavy rain can suspend the toy train and close roads. Use the road option and keep a buffer.
- October to mid-December: the clearest views. Add Narkanda for a Himalayan panorama.
- Late December to February: if it has snowed, Kufri and Narkanda are the places to see it. Roads beyond Dhalli may close for a day.
Who should adapt what?
Senior citizens can skip the Jakhoo climb and use the ropeway or a taxi. Families who want more space can add Chail as a fourth day, with its palace grounds and high cricket ground.
Vehicles are not allowed on the Mall and the Ridge. Choose a hotel with porter service or a short walk from the lift if you are carrying heavy bags.
Plan your month with the best time to visit Shimla, see the full list of things to do in Shimla, and compare with a Manali trip cost if you are thinking of combining the two.
