When is the best time to visit Azerbaijan?

April to June and September to October. Baku sits at 16–27°C, rain is rare, and the countryside towards Gabala and Sheki is green. July and August are hot and humid along the Caspian, while winter is cold and windy in the city but opens the ski slopes at Shahdag and Tufandag.

Baku is one of the driest capitals you will visit, with only about 200–250 mm of rain a year, so the weather factor that matters is wind. The city's reputation for gales is earned: the northerly khazri can make a 7°C winter afternoon feel close to freezing, and it whips up dust in spring.

Azerbaijan season by season

Spring: March to May

Novruz, the spring new year around 20–21 March, fills the Old City with bonfires, music and trays of sweets, with public holidays running several days. April and May are the most pleasant months for the Boulevard and for the Gobustan rock carvings, which sit on an open hillside that bakes by July.

Summer: June to August

June is still comfortable. July and August average around 30°C with sticky humidity, and this is peak season for Gulf and Indian visitors, so rates climb. Gabala and Shahdag in the Greater Caucasus are 8–10°C cooler and make a sensible escape.

Autumn: September to November

September and October are the most balanced months. The Formula 1 street race has been held in September in recent seasons, which pushes up hotel prices for that weekend. November is cool and quiet, with pomegranate harvest fairs in Goychay.

Winter: December to February

Grey and windy with occasional snow in Baku. Shahdag and Tufandag usually run ski lifts from December to March, which suits families who want snow a short flight from Delhi.

Timing around Indian holidays

  • May–June school holidays: warm and busy; book hotels early.
  • Diwali (8 November 2026): cool, quiet, good value; carry a windproof jacket.
  • Christmas–New Year: pretty lights, cold wind, and a chance of mountain snow.

Apply for the Azerbaijan e-visa at least a week before you fly; standard processing is about three working days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Baku very windy?
Yes. Baku sits on an exposed Caspian peninsula and gets strong northerly winds on many days, especially from autumn to spring. It rarely stops sightseeing, but a windproof jacket matters more than an umbrella, and the seafront Boulevard can feel much colder than the forecast temperature.
Can you see snow in Azerbaijan?
Yes. Shahdag, about four hours north of Baku, and Tufandag in Gabala usually have skiable snow from December to March, with lifts and sledging for non-skiers. Baku itself gets only occasional light snow, so plan a mountain day or overnight if snow is the point of the trip.
Is Azerbaijan too hot in summer?
July and August average around 30°C in Baku with high humidity, and Gobustan's open hillside gets hotter. It is manageable with early starts, and Gabala and Shahdag stay 8–10°C cooler. June is the better summer month if school holidays force your dates.
When is Novruz in Azerbaijan?
Novruz falls around the spring equinox, 20–21 March, and Azerbaijan usually gives several days of public holiday around it. Expect bonfires, street music, special sweets and closed government offices. Some museums keep shorter hours, so check timings if your trip overlaps.
