When is the best time to visit Turkey?
Go in April–May or September–October. Istanbul sits in the high teens to mid-20s, Cappadocia's mornings are usually calm enough for balloon flights, and Pamukkale and Ephesus are comfortable to walk at midday. You also avoid the July–August peak, when Istanbul and coastal hotels charge their highest rates.
The table shows Istanbul. Cappadocia is at roughly 1,000–1,200 m, so its nights run 5–8°C colder and winter brings snow. The Aegean coast around Kuşadası and Bodrum is several degrees warmer than Istanbul in summer.
Turkey season by season
Spring: March to May
March is cool and changeable but cheap. April brings the Istanbul Tulip Festival, and by late May the coast is warm enough to swim. Expect Turkish families on the move over Kurban Bayramı, expected around mid-May in 2027.
Summer: June to August
Long, sunny days, but Istanbul reaches 29°C with humidity and Pamukkale's white terraces throw the heat back at you. Queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace are at their longest. Good for a beach add-on, less so for a monument-heavy first trip.
Autumn: September to November
September and October are the sweet spot: the sea is still warm in September and Cappadocia's valleys glow in low light. Rain picks up from late October, and November is cool and grey but quiet.
Winter: December to February
Istanbul is cold and wet, with around 100–120 mm of rain a month, but hotel rates fall sharply outside Christmas–New Year. Snow-covered Cappadocia photographs beautifully, though fog and wind ground more balloons.
Timing around Indian holidays
- May–June school holidays: warm and busy; book 3–4 months ahead.
- Diwali (8 November 2026): cool, uncrowded and good value.
- Christmas–New Year: festive and full in Istanbul; prices jump.
Keep two mornings in Cappadocia. If wind grounds the balloons on day one, most operators move you to the next morning.
