Quick answer
Most Indians need a sticker visa for Turkey, applied for through VFS Global with bank statements, ITRs, hotel bookings and return flights; allow two to three weeks. If you hold a valid US, UK, Irish or Schengen visa or residence permit, you can instead get a single-entry e-visa online for about USD 43, allowing a 30-day stay. There is no visa on arrival.

Common mistakes that get Indians refused
- The e-visa is only for Indians holding a valid US, UK, Irish or Schengen visa or residence permit; airlines and Istanbul immigration check the supporting visa.
- The supporting visa must be valid on your arrival date in Turkey; an expired Schengen visa does not count.
- There is no visa on arrival for Indian passport holders.
- Apply for the e-visa only on the official portal; look-alike sites charge double.
- VFS appointments fill up weeks ahead in summer and around Diwali; book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Do Indians need a visa for Turkey?
Yes. There is no visa on arrival for Indian passport holders. Which route you use depends on whether you already hold a strong-country visa:
- Sticker visa through VFS Global: the route for most Indians.
- E-visa: available only if you hold a valid US, UK, Irish or Schengen visa or residence permit.
The sticker visa, step by step
- Book an appointment at a Turkey visa application centre run by VFS Global. In summer and around Diwali, slots fill up weeks ahead.
- Prepare the file: application form, two recent photos, passport with six months' validity, return flights, hotel bookings for every night, a day-by-day itinerary, a cover letter and travel insurance.
- Add financial papers: three to six months of bank statements with regular salary or business credits, and recent ITRs. Salaried applicants add an employment letter with approved leave; business owners add GST or company registration.
- Submit and give biometrics at the centre. Pay the consular fee and VFS service charge; together they typically come to about ₹6,000–9,000 at the time of review, but check the current figure.
- Allow about two to three weeks for a decision.
The e-visa route
If you hold a valid US, UK, Irish or Schengen visa or residence permit, apply on the official e-visa portal. It costs about USD 43, roughly ₹3,800 plus card charges, is usually issued quickly, and gives a single-entry stay of up to 30 days. The supporting visa must be valid on the day you arrive in Turkey; an expired one does not count. Carry it with you, as both the airline and immigration in Istanbul check it.
What immigration actually checks
For sticker-visa holders, officers mostly check that the visa is valid and the dates match. For e-visa holders, they check the supporting visa as well. A return ticket and first hotel booking are worth keeping handy either way.
Tips for families and seniors
- Children need their own visa. Include a birth certificate, and a consent letter from the other parent if only one parent is travelling.
- Cappadocia balloon flights start before dawn and landings can be bumpy; check any health conditions with the operator before booking older parents.
- Istanbul's old city is hilly; group sights by neighbourhood to cut walking.
- Bank statements with sudden large deposits just before applying raise questions; let funds sit for a few months.
