Common mistakes that get Indians refused
- There is no visa on arrival for Indians; without an e-visa or qualifying third-country visa, airlines will not board you.
- A qualifying US, UK or Schengen visa must be valid on the day you enter Georgia; an expired one does not count.
- If your qualifying visa is in an old passport, carry both passports.
- Georgian border officers have refused some Indian travellers whose plans looked vague or funds thin; carry printed bookings and a bank statement.
- Travel health insurance is compulsory for foreign visitors; carry the policy in print.
Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?
Yes, unless you already hold a qualifying visa from another country. There are two routes:
- E-visa: the standard route for most Indian travellers, applied for on Georgia's official portal.
- Visa-free entry: if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, a Schengen or EU state, or another country on Georgia's list (which includes the Gulf states and Japan), you can enter without a Georgian visa and stay up to 90 days in any 180.

How to apply for the e-visa, step by step
- Collect documents before you start: passport scan, a photo to Georgian specifications, hotel bookings, return flights, travel insurance, six months of bank statements and proof of employment or business. Many applicants are also asked for recent income tax returns.
- Fill the application on the official portal and upload everything as clear PDFs.
- Pay the fee: about USD 20 plus card and service charges.
- Allow five to ten working days, longer in summer. Apply at least three weeks before travel.
- Print the approved e-visa.
What immigration actually checks
Georgian border officers have refused entry to some Indian travellers whose plans looked vague or whose funds looked thin, including a few with valid visas. Carry printed hotel bookings, a return ticket, your insurance and a bank statement or card, and be ready to explain your itinerary in a sentence or two.
Georgia also requires foreign visitors to hold travel health insurance for their stay, a rule in force from 1 January 2026. Carry the policy in print; our travel insurance desk can issue one that names Georgia.
The visa-free route in practice
Your qualifying visa or residence permit must be valid on the day you enter Georgia. An expired Schengen visa does not count. If the visa is in an old passport, carry both passports. The same checks on bookings, funds and insurance apply as for e-visa holders.
Tips for families and seniors
- Every traveller, including children, needs their own e-visa.
- Kazbegi's Gergeti Trinity Church sits at about 2,170 m; the 4x4 ride up is bumpy but spares older parents the steep walk.
- The Gudauri and Kazbegi road can close in winter snow, so keep a buffer day before your flight.
- Armenia is an easy road add-on from Tbilisi, but Azerbaijan needs a flight.
