Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • Do not rely on a visa on arrival; current guidance directs Indian citizens to the e-visa.
  • Applications without the supporting documents (qualifying visa or invitation package) are the most common cause of delay or refusal.
  • Armenia's borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed; reach Armenia by air or overland from Georgia.
  • A temporary visa waiver for some residence-permit holders runs until 1 July 2027; check India's eligibility before relying on it.

Do Indians need a visa for Armenia?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa for Armenia, and the reliable route is the official e-visa, applied for online before you fly. Do not plan on a visa on arrival; current guidance directs Indian citizens to the e-visa, and airlines may refuse boarding without one.

How to apply, step by step

  1. On the official e-visa portal, choose the e-visa type and your dates.
  2. Upload a passport bio-page scan and a photo.
  3. Add the supporting documents asked of Indian applicants: travel or health insurance, plus either a valid US, UK, Schengen/EU, Canadian, Australian, Japanese or similar visa or residence permit, or a package of return ticket, invitation letter from an Armenian host or tour operator and a recent bank statement.
  4. Pay by card. Processing takes up to three working days; allow a week.
  5. The approved e-visa arrives by email as a PDF. Print it.

What immigration actually checks

At Zvartnots airport in Yerevan, or the Bagratashen crossing from Georgia, officers check the e-visa and passport, and sometimes your return ticket and hotel. Tour operators in Yerevan can issue invitation letters for package travellers, which makes the second document route straightforward.

The residence-permit exemption

Armenia's foreign ministry lists a temporary exemption, from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027, for nationals of listed countries who hold a valid residence permit from the US, an EU or Schengen state or several Gulf states. NRIs living in the UAE or Saudi Arabia should check whether India is on that list before skipping the e-visa.

Tips for families and seniors

  • Each child needs their own e-visa, but there is no fee for under-18s.
  • Khor Virap, Garni and Geghard make easy half-day trips from Yerevan. The long Tatev ropeway suits most seniors better than the winding road.
  • Tbilisi to Yerevan by road takes about five to six hours, a common way to combine the two countries.
  • To add Azerbaijan, fly via Tbilisi or another hub, as the land border is closed.
