Quick answer

Five days in Armenia works best with Yerevan as a single base. Spend a day in the city, then take day trips to Garni temple and Geghard, to Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, and to Lake Sevan and Dilijan, finishing at Echmiadzin. Mid-range land cost starts from about ₹30,000 per person, excluding flights. Add a night in Goris for Tatev.

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Arrive in Yerevan

    • Morning: Most connections via the Gulf land between midnight and dawn; check in and sleep.

    • Afternoon: Cascade Complex and the view from the top, then Northern Avenue.

    • Evening: Republic Square and the singing fountains (roughly May to October).

    Stay: Kentron (central Yerevan)

Pay for early check-in if you land overnight; it rescues the first day.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Garni and Geghard

    • Morning: Charents Arch viewpoint for Ararat, then Garni temple and the Symphony of Stones gorge.

    • Afternoon: Geghard cave monastery; lunch in Garni with a lavash-baking demonstration.

    • Evening: Back in Yerevan; dinner in the Kentron cafés.

    Stay: Kentron (central Yerevan)

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank

    • Morning: Early start for Khor Virap while Ararat is clear.

    • Afternoon: Areni village winery lunch, then Noravank monastery in its red-rock gorge.

    • Evening: Return to Yerevan, about 2 hours.

    Stay: Kentron (central Yerevan)

Leave by 7 am; summer haze can hide Ararat by mid-morning.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Lake Sevan and Dilijan

    • Morning: Sevanavank monastery on its peninsula above the lake.

    • Afternoon: Dilijan's old Sharambeyan street and Haghartsin monastery in the forest.

    • Evening: Return to Yerevan; Vernissage market if it is a weekend.

    Stay: Kentron (central Yerevan)

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Echmiadzin and departure

    • Morning: Echmiadzin Cathedral and the Zvartnots ruins, both near the airport road.

    • Afternoon: Genocide Memorial or an Ararat brandy cellar tour.

    • Evening: Transfer to Zvartnots airport for the flight home.

Is 5 days enough for Armenia?

Yes. Armenia is small, and almost every major sight is a day trip from Yerevan, so you stay in one hotel throughout. That makes it one of the easiest trips in the region for families and older travellers. The pace is relaxed in the city and moderate on the day trips, with drives of one to two hours each way.

How this route works

Each day goes in a different direction from Yerevan: east to Garni and Geghard, south to Khor Virap and Noravank, and north to Sevan and Dilijan. Echmiadzin sits west of the city on the airport road, so it fits neatly into your last morning. A private car with driver is the most practical option and is good value here.

Ways to adjust it

  • Add Tatev: one more night, in Goris, for the Wings of Tatev cableway and monastery. It is about 4.5 hours each way, too far for a day trip.
  • Combine with Georgia: drive from Tbilisi to Yerevan in about 5–6 hours via the Debed canyon monasteries.
  • Winter: swap Dilijan for skiing at Tsaghkadzor.

What does this itinerary cost?

Mid-range land cost starts from about ₹30,000 per person, twin sharing, with four nights in a central 3★–4★ hotel, a private car for the day trips, airport transfers and breakfasts. It excludes flights, the visa, entry tickets and most meals. See the full Armenia trip cost, check the Armenia visa rules, and browse things to do in Armenia and our Armenia food guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights from India to Armenia?
At the time of review there were no regular year-round non-stop flights from India to Yerevan. Most travellers connect via Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or Doha, with total journey times of 8–12 hours. Many connecting flights land in Yerevan in the early hours.
Is it better to hire a driver or join group tours in Armenia?
Both work. Group day tours from Yerevan are cheap and cover the main routes. A private driver costs more but lets you start early for Ararat views and set your own pace, which matters with children or elderly parents. For two or more people, a private car is good value.
Can I see Tatev on a 5-day trip?
Only by dropping another day trip. Tatev is about 4.5 hours each way from Yerevan, so it needs an overnight in Goris. Replace the Sevan and Dilijan day with Tatev, staying in Goris, and drive back via Noravank and Khor Virap the next day.
