Quick answer

Eight days in Turkey works best as three nights in Istanbul, two in Cappadocia, one at Pamukkale and one on the Aegean coast near Ephesus. Fly Istanbul to Kayseri, drive west via Konya to Pamukkale, then fly home from Izmir via Istanbul. Mid-range land cost starts at about ₹75,000 per person, excluding international flights and the balloon.

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Arrive in Istanbul

    • Morning: Land at Istanbul Airport (IST), 50–75 minutes by car from the old city. Check in and rest.

    • Afternoon: Gentle first walk around Sultanahmet Square and the Hippodrome, with the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia facing each other.

    • Evening: Early dinner in Sultanahmet; try mercimek soup and pide.

    Stay: Sultanahmet, Istanbul

Buy an Istanbulkart at the first tram or metro stop; it covers trams, ferries and the metro.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Istanbul's old city

    • Morning: Hagia Sophia at opening, then the Blue Mosque outside prayer time.

    • Afternoon: Topkapı Palace with the Harem and the treasury; allow three hours.

    • Evening: Basilica Cistern late session, then the Grand Bazaar before it closes around 7 pm.

    Stay: Sultanahmet, Istanbul

Topkapı closes one day a week and the Grand Bazaar shuts on Sundays; swap days 2 and 3 if needed.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Bosphorus, bazaars and Galata

    • Morning: Spice Bazaar, then a public Bosphorus ferry tour from Eminönü.

    • Afternoon: Walk across the Galata Bridge to Karaköy and Galata Tower.

    • Evening: Istiklal Avenue and dinner in Beyoğlu, or a whirling dervish ceremony in Sirkeci.

    Stay: Sultanahmet, Istanbul

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Fly to Cappadocia

    • Morning: Domestic flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir, about 75 minutes, then a 45–60 minute transfer to Göreme.

    • Afternoon: Uçhisar rock castle and Pigeon Valley viewpoints.

    • Evening: Sunset over Rose or Love Valley, then dinner in Göreme.

Stay: Cave hotel, Göreme or Uçhisar

Flights from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are often cheaper than from IST; check both.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Balloons and valleys

    • Morning: Optional sunrise balloon flight with hotel pickup around 4.30–5.30 am, then breakfast and Göreme Open-Air Museum.

    • Afternoon: Paşabağ fairy chimneys, Devrent valley and a pottery workshop in Avanos.

    • Evening: Testi kebab or a vegetarian gözleme dinner; early night.

Stay: Cave hotel, Göreme or Uçhisar

If wind cancels your balloon, ask the operator to move you to tomorrow's first flight before the drive.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Long road west via Konya

    • Morning: Drive west past the Seljuk caravanserai at Sultanhanı.

    • Afternoon: Mevlana Museum in Konya, the tomb of the poet Rumi.

    • Evening: Arrive at Pamukkale or Karahayıt; soak in a thermal hotel pool.

    Stay: Pamukkale or Karahayıt

This is about 600 km and 8–9 hours with stops. Families with young children can fly Kayseri–Istanbul–Denizli instead.

  7. 7

    Day 7

    Pamukkale and Ephesus

    • Morning: Walk barefoot on the travertine terraces and explore Hierapolis at opening.

    • Afternoon: Drive about 3 hours to Selçuk and tour Ephesus from the upper gate downhill.

    • Evening: Seafront dinner in Kuşadası.

    Stay: Kuşadası or Selçuk

Ephesus closes earlier in winter; check closing time and keep this afternoon unhurried.

  8. 8

    Day 8

    Fly home

    • Morning: Drive about an hour to Izmir Airport (ADB).

    • Afternoon: Domestic flight to Istanbul, about 70 minutes, and connect to Delhi or Mumbai.

    • Evening: Overnight or evening flight home.

Is 8 days enough for Turkey?

Yes, for a first trip that covers the big four: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus. The pace is moderate in Istanbul and Cappadocia, then picks up with one long road day and an early start at Pamukkale. Most of our Turkey trips for Indian families follow this shape.

How the route works

Two domestic flights do the heavy lifting: Istanbul to Kayseri on day 4, and Izmir back to Istanbul on day 8 to meet your international flight. Day 6 is the honest weak point, around 600 km by road, broken up by a caravanserai and Rumi's tomb in Konya. If that is too much, fly Kayseri to Denizli via Istanbul and lose the Konya stop.

Ways to adjust it

  • Slower pace: drop Pamukkale and Ephesus, and add a night each in Istanbul and Cappadocia.
  • With elderly parents: use the flight option on day 6 and book step-free hotel rooms; Cappadocia cave rooms often have stairs.
  • Beach add-on: two nights in Bodrum or Antalya at the end, in May–October.

What does this itinerary cost?

Mid-range land cost starts from about ₹75,000 per person, twin sharing, with 4★ hotels and one cave hotel, both domestic flights, transfers, guided touring and monument entry fees. It excludes international flights, the visa and the balloon. See the full Turkey trip cost, check the Turkey visa process, pick a base with where to stay in Istanbul, and read the Turkey food guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do this Turkey itinerary with elderly parents?
Yes, with two changes. Replace the long day-6 drive with flights from Kayseri to Denizli via Istanbul, and ask for ground-floor or lift-access rooms in Cappadocia, where cave hotels often have steep steps. Ephesus and Pamukkale involve 2–3 km of walking on uneven surfaces, so plan rests.
Should I travel by bus or flight inside Turkey?
Turkey's intercity buses are comfortable and cheap, but distances are long. For an 8-day trip, flights save the most time on Istanbul–Cappadocia and Izmir–Istanbul. Use road transfers between Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus, where flight connections are awkward.
What is the best month for this itinerary?
April, May, September and October are ideal: comfortable for walking at Ephesus and Pamukkale, and generally good for balloon flights. July and August work but are hot on the Aegean side. See our best time to visit Turkey page for month-by-month detail.
