How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Travel in late March, early April or November for lower hotel rates without deep-winter weather.
- Use an Istanbulkart and the public Bosphorus ferries instead of tourist cruises.
- Check e-visa eligibility if you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa; it is cheaper and avoids an appointment.
- Compare domestic flights from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) as well as Istanbul Airport (IST), and include a checked bag when comparing fares.
- Eat lunch at lokantas (canteens), where vegetarian dishes like lentil soup, beans and gözleme cost a fraction of restaurant prices.
How much does a Turkey trip cost from India?
For a 7-night trip covering Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus, plan on about ₹1,20,000 per person at mid-range, twin sharing, including return economy flights. Land-only, the same trip starts around ₹75,000. Budget versions with 3★ hotels and shared tours start near ₹90,000 with flights, and luxury trips with Bosphorus-view hotels and a private guide start from about ₹2.4 lakh.
Turkey costs more than Dubai or Thailand for the same number of nights. That is partly longer flights and partly monument fees, which since 2024 have been priced for foreigners in euros.
What makes a Turkey trip expensive?
- Monument fees. The full first-timer list costs roughly ₹16,000–22,000 per adult. Hagia Sophia alone is about ₹2,550 (EUR 25), and Topkapı with the Harem about ₹5,600–5,800.
- The balloon. About ₹14,000–27,000 per person for a standard basket in season, less in winter.
- Season. July, August and the Christmas–New Year week push hotels and flights up sharply.
- Istanbul hotels. Good 4★ rooms in Sultanahmet or Karaköy are pricier than the rest of the country.
What about the visa?
Most Indian travellers need a sticker visa through the Turkish visa application centre, which with service charges costs roughly ₹6,000–9,000 at the time of review. If you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit, you can usually use the cheaper e-visa instead. See our Turkey visa guide for documents and timelines.
Money on the ground
The Turkish lira has lost value quickly in recent years, so lira prices change often and many tourist services quote in euros. Cards work almost everywhere in cities. Carry a multi-currency forex card plus some euros for small cash needs; our foreign exchange service can set this up. Overseas tour packages bought from an Indian operator attract TCS, which you can adjust against your income tax.
Insurance matters on this trip: a balloon or a twisted ankle on the Ephesus marble can be expensive. Compare travel insurance that covers adventure activities.
