Quick answer

The best things to do in Georgia are exploring Old Tbilisi and its sulphur baths, riding the cable car to Narikala fortress, and driving the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi for the Gergeti Trinity Church below Mount Kazbek. Add a wine day in Kakheti, the ancient capital Mtskheta, and paragliding or skiing at Gudauri.

What are the top things to do in Georgia?

Georgia rewards a simple plan: Tbilisi for two days, one or two days on the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, and a day in Kakheti wine country. Six days covers it comfortably. Tbilisi itself is compact, and the old town, baths, cable car and Bridge of Peace are all within walking distance of each other.

The drive north is the highlight for most Indian travellers. In one day you pass Mtskheta's cathedrals, the Ananuri fortress on its reservoir, Gudauri's ski slopes and the Jvari pass at 2,379 m, then climb to the Gergeti Trinity Church. Doing it as an overnight in Stepantsminda is far more relaxed, and you get the church at sunrise.

Summer or snow?

From June to October, Kazbegi has green meadows and easy walks to waterfalls. From December to March, Gudauri turns into a ski resort, with snowmobiles and sledging for non-skiers, which is why many Indian families visit over Christmas. Paragliding runs year-round when the wind allows.

What to watch for

  • Kazbegi tour prices vary widely; confirm whether the 4x4 to Gergeti is included.
  • The Kazbegi road can close for hours after heavy snow in winter.
  • Wine is central to Georgian hospitality, but it is never rude to decline.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Kazbegi day trip from Tbilisi enough?
A day trip works and is the most popular choice, but it means 6–7 hours in a vehicle. An overnight in Stepantsminda lets you reach Gergeti Trinity Church at sunrise, hike to a waterfall and break the drive. With older parents or young children, we usually suggest the overnight.
Are the Tbilisi sulphur baths suitable for families?
Yes, if you book a private room, which comes with its own pool, sauna and changing area for your group. Public sections are separated by gender and expect nudity. Keep soaks short, around 15 minutes at a time, as the water is hot and mineral-rich.
Can non-drinkers enjoy a Kakheti wine tour?
Yes. Wineries also show the qvevri clay-jar process, serve fresh grape juice in harvest season and often make churchkhela, the walnut-and-grape sweet. Sighnaghi's walls and Bodbe Monastery are worth the trip on their own. Mention it when booking so the tasting is adjusted.
