Quick answer
The essential things to do in Abu Dhabi are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan and one Yas Island theme park such as Ferrari World. Add the Corniche, mangrove kayaking and an Al Ain day trip if you have time. Three days covers the highlights without rushing between islands.

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?
Three days covers the essentials: one for the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and the Corniche, one for Saadiyat's Louvre and beach, and one for a Yas Island park. Add a fourth for Al Ain. Abu Dhabi is spread out, so taxis between islands take 20–40 minutes, and that eats into a day. See the day-by-day plan in our itineraries.
Abu Dhabi or a day trip from Dubai?
If you only want the Grand Mosque and the mandir, a day trip from Dubai works. If you want the Louvre, Qasr Al Watan and a theme park as well, staying two or three nights is less tiring and gives you the mosque at sunset, when it looks its best. Compare budgets on Abu Dhabi trip cost.
Dress codes and etiquette
Both the Grand Mosque and the BAPS Mandir expect modest dress: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women at the mosque. Abayas are available at the mosque, but queues for them can be long. Public displays of affection, loud music and drone flying are best avoided across the emirate.
Getting around
Taxis are metered and reliable. Public buses are cheap but slow for visitors. Most hotels on Yas and Saadiyat run shuttles to their nearest sights.
Check the best season for your dates on best time to visit Abu Dhabi. From June to September, plan the Grand Mosque after sunset.
