Our verdict

Pick Dubai for a first UAE trip: more attractions, nightlife, shopping and hotel choice, from about ₹22,000 per person on land for 4 nights. Pick Abu Dhabi for a calmer, theme-park-led family trip on Yas Island, or for culture at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre and BAPS Hindu Mandir. Most travellers do best with 3–4 nights in Dubai and 1–2 in Abu Dhabi.

Which one is for you?

Choose Dubai if…

  • It is your first trip to the UAE and you want the classic sights
  • Nightlife, shopping and the Dubai Shopping Festival matter
  • You want the most hotel choice at every budget
  • You prefer using the metro over taxis

Choose Abu Dhabi if…

  • Your children want Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld
  • You want a quieter stay with cleaner beaches
  • The Grand Mosque, Louvre and BAPS Hindu Mandir are priorities
  • You are flying Etihad and want a short stay near the airport

Most travellers should do both

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are about 140 km apart, 1.5 hours by road, and one UAE tourist visa covers both. So the real question is where to sleep. For most Indian travellers, 3–4 nights in Dubai plus a day trip or 1–2 nights in Abu Dhabi is the right balance.

Where Dubai is stronger

Dubai has more of the things a first UAE trip is built around: the Burj Khalifa observation decks (from about AED 169, ₹4,050), Dubai Mall and its fountain show, the Gold Souk, a dhow dinner cruise, desert safaris, Global Village in winter and the Museum of the Future. Hotel choice is far wider, nightlife is livelier, and the Metro runs from the airport to Dubai Marina. A 4-night land package starts around ₹22,000 per person, twin sharing. See things to do in Dubai and Dubai trip cost.

Where Abu Dhabi is stronger

Abu Dhabi is calmer, greener and better for culture and theme parks. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to visit and, for many travellers, the most impressive building in the UAE. The Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan palace are worth half a day each, and the BAPS Hindu Mandir at Abu Mureikha, opened in 2024, has become a fixture on Indian itineraries. Yas Island packs Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld into one area, with hotels close to the parks, which suits families with children over about 8. Saadiyat's beaches are cleaner and quieter than Dubai's. Three nights on land start around ₹20,000, but theme-park tickets add up quickly. More in things to do in Abu Dhabi.

The trade-offs: no metro, fewer budget hotels near the sights, much quieter evenings and less shopping.

Visas and flights

One UAE tourist e-visa, about ₹6,500–8,000 for 30 days, covers every emirate, and holders of a valid US, UK or EU visa or residence permit can get a visa on arrival. See the UAE visa guide. Non-stop flights reach both cities from major Indian metros in 3–4 hours; Dubai has many more daily flights, often at lower fares, while Abu Dhabi is served by Etihad, Air India and IndiGo.

When to go

November to March for both, when daytime highs are 24–30°C. Abu Dhabi's Formula 1 weekend at Yas Marina, usually in late November or early December, pushes Yas hotel prices sharply up. The Dubai Shopping Festival runs from mid-December into January. See Dubai month by month.

How to combine them

The easiest plan is an open-jaw ticket: fly into Abu Dhabi, spend 1–2 nights, then move to Dubai for 3 nights and fly home from there. A private transfer costs roughly AED 250–350 (₹6,000–8,400) per car; the intercity bus is about AED 25 (₹600) per person. If you only have a day, a guided Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai covers the Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Abu Dhabi better than Dubai for families?
For families focused on theme parks, yes. Yas Island has Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld close to several hotels, and Abu Dhabi is quieter overall. Dubai has more variety, metro access and budget hotels, so many families stay in Dubai and add 1–2 nights on Yas Island.
Do I need a separate visa for Abu Dhabi?
No. A UAE tourist visa covers all seven emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Indian passport holders apply for an e-visa costing about ₹6,500–8,000 for 30 days, or can get a visa on arrival if they hold a valid US visa or green card, or a UK or EU visa or residence permit.
How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai?
About 140 km, or roughly 1.5 hours by road between the city centres, depending on traffic. A private car costs roughly ₹6,000–8,400 one way and the intercity bus about ₹600 per person. Yas Island sits on the Dubai side of Abu Dhabi, about an hour from Dubai Marina.
Is one day enough for Abu Dhabi?
For the main sights, yes: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and a drive along the Corniche fit into a day trip from Dubai. If you also want the Louvre, the BAPS Hindu Mandir or a Yas Island theme park, plan at least one night, since each takes half a day or more.
