Our verdict

Pick Dubai for a short, safe, family-friendly winter trip with parents or children — 3–4 hour flights, theme parks, desert safari and shopping, from about ₹42,000 per person for 4 nights with flights. Pick Thailand for beaches, islands, nightlife and more nights for your money: 5 nights start around ₹40,000 with flights, and there is no visa fee.

Which one is for you?

Choose Dubai if…

  • You are travelling with grandparents or toddlers
  • You want the shortest possible flight and a very safe city
  • Gold and electronics shopping is part of the plan
  • Your dates fall between November and March

Choose Thailand if…

  • You want beaches and island-hopping
  • It is a honeymoon or a friends' trip with nightlife
  • You want an extra night for the same budget
  • You would rather avoid visa fees and paperwork
  • Your holiday falls in summer, when Dubai is over 40°C

Which is better for a first international trip?

Both are popular first trips for Indians, for good reasons: short flights, simple entry and Indian food everywhere. The difference is the type of holiday. Dubai is a city break built around desert safari, Burj Khalifa, malls and theme parks. Thailand is a beach-and-city trip with islands, temples, markets and nightlife.

Cost: nearly identical at the starting level

A 4-night Dubai land package in a 3★–4★ hotel, with a desert safari, city tour and dhow cruise, starts around ₹22,000 per person, twin sharing; with return flights it is roughly ₹42,000. A 5-night Thailand package (Pattaya and Bangkok, or Phuket and Krabi) starts around ₹20,000 on land and roughly ₹40,000 with flights. Thailand gives you an extra night for similar money, and day-to-day costs are lower: a Thai street meal costs THB 60–100 (₹160–270), while a basic café meal in Dubai is AED 30–50 (₹720–1,200). Full figures in Dubai trip cost and Thailand trip cost.

Visa effort

Thailand is simpler: visa-free entry for tourism plus the online TDAC arrival card. The UAE needs a tourist e-visa costing about ₹6,500–8,000 for 30 days, unless you hold a valid US, UK or EU visa or residence permit, which qualifies you for a visa on arrival. Read the UAE visa guide and Thailand visa guide.

Who should choose Dubai

Dubai suits families with grandparents and small children. Flights are 3 hours from Mumbai and under 4 from Delhi, the city is very safe at all hours, hotels and malls are step-free, and vegetarian and Jain food is as easy as in any Indian city. It is also the better shopping trip for gold and electronics, especially during the Dubai Shopping Festival from mid-December. The catch is the calendar: from June to September it is over 40°C. See things to do in Dubai.

Who should choose Thailand

Thailand suits couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants the sea. Dubai's city beaches are clean and calm, but they cannot compete with the limestone islands of Krabi and Phi Phi. Nightlife is also cheaper and later in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Families do well in Thailand too, but choose Phuket, Krabi or Bangkok over Pattaya, whose Walking Street area is not suited to children.

Seasons

Both are best from November to February. Dubai stays pleasant into March, and Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is good until April. In the June–September monsoon, Thailand's west-coast seas get rough, though Bangkok remains workable with short daily showers, which is still more comfortable than Dubai at 42°C.

Can you combine Dubai and Thailand?

Only as a stopover. Dubai to Bangkok is about 6 hours by air, so adding 2 nights in Dubai on the way to Bangkok is possible, but you pay for the UAE visa and lose time. Dubai pairs more naturally with Abu Dhabi, and Thailand with Bali, Singapore or Vietnam. See all pairings on our compare page.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper for Indians, Dubai or Thailand?
At the starting level they are close: about ₹42,000 per person for 4 nights in Dubai with flights, and about ₹40,000 for 5 nights in Thailand with flights. Thailand is cheaper day to day, with street meals around ₹160–270 and no visa fee, so most travellers spend less there overall.
Is Dubai or Thailand better for families?
Dubai is easier with grandparents and toddlers: shorter flights, step-free malls, theme parks and Indian food everywhere. Thailand works well for families with school-age children who want beaches and island trips; base yourself in Phuket, Krabi or Bangkok rather than Pattaya.
Is Dubai or Thailand better for a honeymoon?
Thailand, for most couples. Krabi and Phuket offer beach resorts, island-hopping and sunset cruises at lower prices. Dubai works for couples who prefer luxury hotels, desert dinners and shopping, especially combined with a night or two in Abu Dhabi. Visit either between November and March.
Can I travel to Dubai or Thailand in summer?
Thailand is the better summer pick: Bangkok and Gulf-coast islands such as Koh Samui stay usable through June–August, though the Andaman side is rough. Dubai in summer exceeds 40°C, so outdoor activities are limited to early mornings and evenings, although hotel rates fall noticeably.
