Our verdict

Choose Goa for a short, cheaper beach break: about ₹20,000–28,000 per person for 4 nights with flights from Delhi, no passport needed. Choose Thailand if you have 5–6 nights and want islands, clearer water and city shopping on a first international trip, at about ₹40,000–52,000 per person with flights; Indians enter visa-free at the time of review.

Which one is for you?

Choose Goa if…

  • Your total budget is around ₹25,000 per person including flights
  • You have a long weekend or 3–4 nights
  • You're travelling with vegetarian or Jain family members
  • Someone in your group doesn't have a passport yet

Choose Thailand if…

  • You want a short-haul first international trip without a visa application
  • Clear-water island days at Phi Phi or Krabi matter more than shacks
  • You want to mix beaches with Bangkok's temples, shopping and night markets
  • You have 5–6 nights and a budget of ₹40,000–55,000 per person

The real question: budget and time

Goa and Thailand get compared because both sell beaches, nightlife and easy flights. Money is the clearest difference. For a Delhi traveller, Thailand costs about double Goa, but it adds clearer water, island-hopping and a big city.

The Thailand land cost covers Bangkok with Pattaya, or Phuket with Krabi, including transfers and a couple of tours; Phi Phi trips, travel insurance and spending money are extra. Fares to Bangkok from Kolkata, Chennai or Bengaluru are often lower than from Delhi. For the full breakdown, see Thailand trip cost and Goa trip cost.

Visa and paperwork

Goa needs nothing more than ID. For Thailand, Indian passport holders have been able to enter visa-free for tourism since late 2023. You need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket, a hotel booking and the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card completed before landing. The permitted stay has changed more than once, so check our Thailand visa guide before paying for flights.

What you get for the extra money

Thailand's Andaman coast has the limestone cliffs and clear water that Goa lacks: Phi Phi, Railay and the islands off Krabi. Bangkok adds temples, malls and street food, and Pattaya and Phuket run nightlife all year. Goa's strengths are ease and familiarity: Goan seafood, beach shacks, the churches of Old Goa and quick weekend access.

Food and family comfort

Vegetarian and Jain food is easy in Goa. In Thailand, Indian restaurants are common in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, but Thai dishes often contain fish sauce or shrimp paste, so ask clearly. For families, Safari World, aquariums and island boat trips are popular, but every island day means early starts and speedboats.

The honest trade-offs

Goa's peak season, mid-December to early January, can be poor value, with rooms at two to three times normal rates; at that point a Thailand trip from Kolkata or Chennai can cost almost the same. Thailand's add-ons, from island tours to tuk-tuks, add up quickly, and forex and card fees apply.

Who should go where

Choose Goa for a short, low-cost break, or when anyone in the group lacks a passport. Choose Thailand for a 5–6 night first international trip with more variety. See when to visit Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thailand cheaper than Goa?
Not usually. From Delhi, a 4-night Goa trip with flights costs about ₹20,000–28,000 per person, while 5 nights in Thailand with flights costs about ₹40,000–52,000. The gap narrows during Goa's Christmas–New Year peak, and when you fly to Bangkok from Kolkata, Chennai or Bengaluru, where fares are often lower.
Do Indians need a visa for Thailand?
At the time of review, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism, a policy in place since late 2023. You need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket, proof of accommodation and the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card. The permitted stay length has been revised, so check the Royal Thai Embassy website before booking.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Goa or Thailand?
Thailand offers more for a 5–6 night honeymoon: clear-water islands at Krabi and Phi Phi, beach resorts in Phuket and a city break in Bangkok. Goa works for a shorter, cheaper honeymoon, especially in quieter South Goa resorts outside the December peak.
Is Thailand good for vegetarians?
It's manageable. Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Krabi have many Indian restaurants, and most packages for Indian travellers include Indian meals. Local Thai dishes often contain fish sauce, shrimp paste or egg, so ask for jay (Thai vegan) food. Jain travellers should pre-arrange meals through their tour operator.
How many days do you need in Thailand compared with Goa?
Goa works well in three or four nights. Thailand needs at least five: two in Bangkok and three in Pattaya or Phuket, or six to seven nights to add Krabi or Phi Phi. Short Thailand trips spend too much of the budget on flights for the time you get.
