Our verdict

Choose Goa for a 3–4 night beach break with nightlife, cheap flights and minimal planning; land packages start around ₹10,000 per person. Choose the Andamans for clearer water, snorkelling, diving and a quieter honeymoon, but plan at least five nights at about ₹22,000 per person on land, plus pricier flights. For water quality, the Andamans win clearly.

Which one is for you?

Choose Goa if…

  • You have three or four nights and about ₹20,000–25,000 per person including flights
  • Nightlife, beach shacks and casinos are part of the plan
  • You're coming from Mumbai, Pune or Bengaluru and want a short hop or drive
  • You'd rather not plan around ferry timings

Choose Andaman Islands if…

  • Clear water, snorkelling and a first scuba dive matter most
  • You're on a honeymoon and want quiet beaches and early nights
  • You have five or six nights to cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil
  • You want to travel in March or April, when Andaman seas are calmest for diving

Two very different beach holidays

Goa is a social beach destination: shacks, music, scooters and a Portuguese-era old town. The Andaman Islands are about the sea itself, with clear water, coral and long empty beaches, and very little to do after dark. Both are domestic trips, and Indian citizens need no permits for the main tourist islands.

How much does each cost?

A 3-night Goa land package starts around ₹10,000 per person, twin sharing, and return flights from Delhi typically cost ₹8,000–15,000. A realistic Goa total is about ₹20,000–25,000 per person.

The Andamans cost more for three reasons. Flights to Port Blair (now officially Sri Vijaya Puram) are longer and pricier, at ₹14,000–26,000 return from Delhi. You need at least five nights to make the ferry journeys worthwhile. And inter-island private ferries add ₹4,000–6,000 per person. A 5-night package covering Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) starts around ₹22,000 per person on land, so a realistic total from Delhi is ₹38,000–48,000. What's in the water

This is the main reason to pick the Andamans. Elephant Beach on Havelock, North Bay off Port Blair and the reefs off Neil are good for snorkelling, and Havelock is India's main scuba centre, with try dives typically ₹4,500–7,000. Goa's Arabian Sea is sandy and murky by comparison; water sports there mean parasailing, jet skis and banana rides, not reefs.

Timing

Goa is best from November to February. The Andamans are good from November to April, with March and April offering the calmest seas and best visibility. From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings rough seas and cancelled ferries in the Andamans, while Goa closes its beaches to water sports. Check when to visit the Andamans.

The honest trade-offs

In the Andamans, ferry timings shape every day, with early starts and transfers that eat half a day each way. Private ferries sell out in December and January, so book them with your hotels. Mobile data is slow on Havelock and Neil, and dinner options are limited outside resorts. Goa's trade-offs are crowds and prices: Christmas–New Year rates double or triple, North Goa is noisy, and traffic between beaches is slow.

Who should go where

Pick Goa for friends' trips, short breaks and anyone who wants evenings out. Pick the Andamans for honeymoons, snorkelling and diving, and for families who want calm water and early nights, provided you have five or six nights. See things to do in the Andamans to plan your island days.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Andaman better than Goa for a honeymoon?
For most couples, yes. The Andamans offer quiet beaches such as Radhanagar and Kalapathar, clear water for snorkelling and resorts where evenings are calm. Goa is better if you want nightlife, cafes and a short 3–4 night trip. Budget roughly ₹38,000–48,000 per person for 5 nights in the Andamans with flights from Delhi.
How many days do I need in the Andamans compared with Goa?
Plan at least five nights in the Andamans: one or two in Port Blair, two or three on Havelock and one on Neil, because ferries take 1.5–2.5 hours each way. Goa works well in three or four nights, since most beaches are under an hour from the airports.
Is an Andaman trip much more expensive than Goa?
Usually about double. A Goa trip from Delhi with flights costs roughly ₹20,000–25,000 per person for 3 nights, while 5 nights in the Andamans with flights costs ₹38,000–48,000. Flights to Port Blair, inter-island ferries and the extra nights account for most of the difference.
Do Indians need a permit for the Andaman Islands?
No. Indian citizens need only valid photo ID to visit the main tourist islands, including Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), Neil (Shaheed Dweep), Baratang and Diglipur. Tribal reserves and most of the Nicobar Islands are restricted, and foreign nationals follow separate rules.
Can you do scuba diving in Goa?
Yes, mainly around Grande Island off South Goa, but visibility is usually low and there's little coral, so it's best treated as a first experience rather than proper diving. If diving is a priority, the Andamans, especially Havelock, offer much clearer water and more marine life.
