Quick answer

Abu Dhabi is easy for vegetarians in the city centre, where Al Markaziyah, Hamdan Street and Electra Street have many Indian vegetarian and South Indian restaurants. On Yas Island and Saadiyat, you rely on hotels and malls, which cost more and have fewer pure-vegetarian choices. Jain food needs advance notice. Arabic mezze is a reliable vegetarian fallback everywhere.

The vegetarian backbone of any Arabic meal; available everywhere from cafeterias to hotels.

  • Spinach fatayer

Triangular baked pastries filled with spinach, onion and sumac; a good snack between sights.

  • Regag bread

Paper-thin Emirati bread with cheese or honey. It also comes with egg, so specify.

  • Machboos

Spiced rice with chicken, lamb or fish, cooked in meat stock.

  • Thareed

Is Abu Dhabi good for vegetarian travellers?

Yes, especially if you stay in the city. The older central districts around Al Markaziyah, Hamdan Street and Electra Street are full of Indian restaurants: Udupi breakfasts, Gujarati and North Indian vegetarian thalis, and Kerala meals, many open from early morning to late night. Most staff speak Hindi or Malayalam. Choose your base with this in mind on where to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Eating on Yas Island and Saadiyat

The theme-park and beach islands have fewer independent restaurants. Hotels and malls such as Yas Mall have Indian restaurants and food courts, but choice is narrower and prices higher. Inside the theme parks, vegetarian options are mostly pizza, pasta and fries; carry snacks for children. Saadiyat resorts can prepare Indian vegetarian dishes on request.

Jain food in Abu Dhabi

Gujarati restaurants in the city centre can usually cook without onion, garlic and root vegetables. Hotels need notice at booking and again at check-in. On days at Yas Island or the desert, carry khakhra, thepla or ready-to-eat meals.

Emirati food: what to know

Emirati food is built around rice, bread, dates and slow-cooked meat or fish, so few traditional dishes are vegetarian. Breakfast is the easiest meal to try: regag bread with cheese, luqaimat and gahwa with dates. Watch for egg in chebab and balaleet, and meat stock in machboos, thareed and saloona even when the meat is removed.

Visiting the mosque and mandir

Plan meals around your visits on things to do in Abu Dhabi. The Grand Mosque area has cafés and a mall nearby. The BAPS Mandir sits away from the city, so eat before you go or carry snacks.

Lunch at a city-centre Indian restaurant costs a fraction of a resort meal, which keeps the food budget on Abu Dhabi trip cost realistic.

Packaged snacks from India are fine to carry for personal use; check the UAE visa guide for entry basics.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find Indian vegetarian food in Abu Dhabi?
The city centre around Al Markaziyah, Hamdan Street and Electra Street has the widest choice of Indian vegetarian restaurants, including South Indian, Gujarati and North Indian thalis. Malls such as Al Wahda, Marina Mall and Yas Mall have Indian food-court options. Resort islands rely on hotel restaurants.
Is food at Yas Island theme parks vegetarian-friendly?
Partly. Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld have vegetarian options such as pizza, pasta, fries and salads, but Indian vegetarian food is limited inside the parks and prices are high. Eat a big breakfast, carry permitted snacks for children, and have dinner at Yas Mall.
Is Emirati food vegetarian?
Rarely. Most traditional Emirati dishes such as machboos, harees, thareed and saloona use meat, fish or meat stock. Vegetarians can try regag bread with cheese, luqaimat, dates and Arabic coffee. Lebanese-style mezze, widely available in Abu Dhabi, is the most reliable vegetarian Arabic food.
