Quick answer
August is the wettest stretch of the monsoon in much of India, so plan around the rain. In India, the best picks are Ladakh, which stays dry, the Valley of Flowers at peak bloom, and Alleppey for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Abroad, choose Kenya for the Mara River crossings, Bali for dry weather, or Scotland for the Edinburgh festivals.
Best places in India in August
12–25°C (Leh), dryLadakh
Ladakh stays dry and warm by mountain standards, the passes are clear, and apricots ripen in the Nubra and Sham valleys. Late August is quieter than July as the summer rush thins out.
8–18°C, frequent rainValley of Flowers, Uttarakhand
Peak bloom continues into mid-August, and the lake at Hemkund Sahib is ringed with brahma kamal. Rain and landslides on the approach road are common, so allow buffer days.
23–29°C, monsoon showersAlleppey
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake is usually held on the second Saturday of August, with snake boats crewed by about 100 rowers each. Book a houseboat or lakeside stay well ahead for that weekend.
10–24°C (Kaza), mostly drySpiti Valley
Green fields around Kaza, the Pin Valley and Chandratal are at their brightest, and the Kunzum road is fully open. Landslides on the approach roads can close them for a day or two, so keep slack in your plan.
15–30°C (Srinagar), mostly dryKashmir
The valley gets little monsoon rain, so August is warm and green, and the Gurez valley is accessible. The Amarnath Yatra ends on Raksha Bandhan, after which hotel rates in Pahalgam and Sonamarg ease.
25–33°C, monsoon showersJaipur
Teej, usually in late July or August, brings a procession of the goddess from the City Palace through the old city, and the Aravallis around Amber and Nahargarh turn green. It is humid between showers, but crowds are thin and hotel rates low.
22–30°C, light showersHampi
Hampi gets only moderate rain, so August is green and cooler than summer, with the Tungabhadra running full past the ruins. Coracle rides can be suspended when the river is high, but homestay rates are low.
26–35°C, occasional showersPuducherry
The east coast misses most of the south-west monsoon, so Puducherry is drier than Goa or Kerala in August. It is hot and humid, but White Town's cafés and the cycle trails around Auroville make a good long weekend from Chennai or Bengaluru.
Best places abroad in August
12–26°C, dryMasai Mara, Kenya
Mara River crossings are usually most frequent in August and September, as the herds move between Tanzania and Kenya. Riverside camps book out about six months ahead, so plan early.
23–30°C, dryBali
It is dry and sunny, but August is the year's busiest month with European and Australian holidaymakers. Stay in Ubud, Sidemen or Amed rather than Seminyak to avoid the worst crowds.
11–19°C, mild, showersEdinburgh, Scotland
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs for most of August, alongside the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the castle. Edinburgh hotel rates rise sharply, so consider staying in Glasgow, about an hour away by train.
12–20°C, some rainNorway and Finland
Fjord country is warm enough for kayaking, and August is the last full month of summer timetables on the Norway in a Nutshell route. Prices dip after Scandinavian schools restart in mid-August.
25–33°C, dry on the east coastSri Lanka
Kandy's Esala Perahera usually takes place over ten nights in late July or August, and seats along the route sell out. The east coast at Trincomalee and Pasikudah is dry and calm.
26–34°C, mostly dry in the centreCentral Vietnam
Da Nang and Hoi An are still in their dry season, while Hanoi gets afternoon thunderstorms. Beach resort rates on My Khe are reasonable compared with the winter peak.
18–25°C, mostly dryMauritius
Winter on the island brings mild days and low humidity, and humpback whales pass along the west coast from about July to October. The east coast can be windy, so the west and north suit a beach stay better.
10–24°C, mostly dryCanada
Days are warm in the Rockies and Vancouver, and wildflowers fill the high meadows. Wildfire smoke can affect parts of British Columbia and Alberta in August, so check air quality and park alerts before you go.

What does August mean for Indian holidays?
August is a monsoon month with a few holiday spikes. Independence Day (15 August) falls on a Sunday in 2027, so it does not create a long weekend, but Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami, both usually in August, add festival travel within India. Onam, in late August or September, brings Kerala its own holiday rush.
Apart from those dates, domestic travel is quiet and prices are low. Kerala, Goa, Coorg and Rajasthan's lake cities are at monsoon rates, and Dubai is cheap but very hot. Abroad, it is the opposite: Europe, Bali and Kenya are at their annual peak, and Schengen and UK visa appointments are hard to find. For a Europe trip in August, start the visa process two to three months ahead.
Where is the weather best in August?
Ladakh, Spiti and the Kashmir valley are dry while the rest of the north gets the monsoon; see the best time to visit Spiti Valley. The east coast, from Puducherry to Chennai, gets far less rain than the west. Kerala, Hampi and Jaipur are green and best for travellers who enjoy the rain.
Abroad, Bali, East Africa, Scandinavia, Canada and Sri Lanka's east coast are in their dry season; see things to do in Kenya to plan a safari.
Where should you avoid in August?
- Himachal and Uttarakhand road trips: August often brings the heaviest rain in the western Himalaya, with landslides on the Manali, Shimla and Char Dham roads. Recent years have seen major flash floods.
- Wildlife parks: Kaziranga, Corbett's Dhikala zone and Ranthambore's core zones remain closed.
- Andaman Islands: Rough seas and frequent ferry cancellations.
- Dubai, Doha and Muscat: Highs of 41–43°C.
- Southern Europe: Rome, Barcelona and Santorini are crowded, expensive and often above 35°C.
- Hong Kong, the Philippines and southern Japan: Peak typhoon season.
What does an August trip cost?
| Trip | Starting price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ladakh, 6 nights | ₹28,000+ | Rates ease late in the month |
| Kashmir, 5 nights | ₹17,000+ | Lower after the yatra ends |
| Kerala, 5 nights | ₹19,000+ | Boat race weekend costs more |
| Bali, 6 nights | ₹32,000+ | Busiest month of the year |
| Switzerland, 7 nights | ₹1.3 lakh+ | Peak summer rates |
Prices are per person, twin sharing, excluding flights. Kenya safaris are priced separately; see Kenya trip cost and our tour packages.
If you are going to Ladakh in August, carry a rain jacket anyway. Short, heavy bursts on the Manali–Leh road are common even when Leh itself is dry.
