Quick answer

September is the bridge between the monsoon and peak season, and one of the best-value months to travel. In India, the best picks are Ladakh for clear skies and the Ladakh Festival, Kashmir for early autumn, and Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh for its music festival. Abroad, choose Bali as the crowds thin, Turkey for warm seas, or Munich for Oktoberfest.

Best places in India in September

Sela Lake is a high-altitude lake located near Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh, India, at an elevation of approximately 13,700 feet.15–26°C, showers

Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh

The Ziro Festival of Music is usually held in late September among the rice fields of the Apatani plateau. The monsoon is easing but still wet, so pack waterproof shoes; an Inner Line Permit is required.

Living root bridge, Meghalaya, India.15–24°C, showers easing

Meghalaya

Rain eases through September while the waterfalls stay full, which makes it a good compromise month for Cherrapunji. The Umngot River at Dawki is not yet clear; that comes from about November.

Panoramic view of Taj Palace Hotel and Taj Tower with the iconic Gateway of India in the background, overlooking the Arabian Sea in Mumbai25–30°C, monsoon showers

Mumbai

Ganesh Chaturthi, usually in late August or September, fills Mumbai with ten days of pandals, with Lalbaugcha Raja drawing the longest queues. Visit pandals late at night and expect road closures on immersion day.

Paddy straw and stubble, shade trees for coffee on the hill slope, Balamuri, Coorg, Karnataka, India17–27°C, easing showers

Coorg

The monsoon eases in the second half of the month, leaving coffee estates green and waterfalls full without the July downpours. It suits a long weekend from Bengaluru or Mysuru.

Kerala backwaters, Houseboats, India23–30°C, showers

Kerala

Onam usually falls in late August or September, with the Thiruvonam feast, flower carpets and boat races. Afterwards the monsoon tails off and resort rates stay low until October.

Kee monastery Spiti Valley (edited)4–20°C (Kaza), dry

September is the last full month before Spiti's long winter: skies are clear and the fields are being harvested. Chandratal's campsites usually close around the end of the month or in early October.

Best places abroad in September

Rice terraces, Bali23–31°C, dry

Bali

It is still dry, but crowds thin as European summer holidays end and villa rates fall. September is one of Bali's best months for weather against price.

Hot air balloons over valleys near Göreme at dawn16–29°C, dry

Turkey

Munich, Germany

Three domes of Oia in Santorini19–28°C, dry

Greece

The heat breaks to the high 20s, the Aegean is warm, and ferries still run summer timetables to Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos. Santorini's cruise crowds ease in the second half of the month.

Mount Kilimanjaro with elephants12–27°C, dry

Masai Mara, Kenya

River crossings continue in the Mara through September, and the dry season keeps game easy to spot. Rates are still at their peak, so book early.

Aurora over Flakstad, Lofoten, Norway.5–12°C (Tromsø), changeable

Norway and Finland

Uzbekistan

Highs drop back to the high 20s by late September, and the bazaars of Samarkand and Bukhara are full of melons and grapes. It is the second of Uzbekistan's two best windows, after April and May.

Why is September a good-value month?

September sits between two busy periods. Schools are in session, the summer peak is over, and the festival rush of October and November has not started. Domestic fares and hotel rates are among the lowest of the year outside the monsoon-hit coasts, and Europe's shoulder season brings lower rates and easier Schengen visa appointments than in summer.

Festivals add a few busy pockets. Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam usually fall in late August or September, and Navratri can begin in late September, depending on the year. Pitru Paksha, the fortnight before Navratri, is a period when many families avoid new trips and purchases, which keeps some domestic demand lower.

September is also the month to book Diwali and Christmas. Flights and hotels for Dubai, Thailand, Singapore, Goa and Kerala over Diwali week and from 20 December to 2 January rise steadily from now. Our tour packages list fixed departures for both.

Where is the weather best in September?

The monsoon usually starts withdrawing from western Rajasthan in mid-September, going by IMD's normal dates, and retreats east through the month. Ladakh is at its clearest and the Kashmir valley is cool and dry; see the best time to visit Ladakh. The rest of the country is green, with the rains easing by the end of the month.

Abroad, Bali, Turkey, Greece, Uzbekistan and East Africa are dry and less crowded than in August. Northern Europe gets cooler and the northern lights season begins. See things to do in Turkey for a first-time plan.

Where should you avoid in September?

  • Dubai and the Gulf: Still 38–40°C. Wait until late October.
  • Phuket, Krabi and Langkawi: September is among the wettest months on the Andaman coast, with rough seas.
  • Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan: Typhoon season peaks, and flights and ferries are often disrupted.
  • Goa beaches: Rain continues and most shacks reopen only in October.
  • Ranthambore, Corbett and Kaziranga: Ranthambore's core zones reopen on 1 October, Corbett's main zones between mid-October and mid-November, and Kaziranga in October or November.
  • Himachal and Uttarakhand early in the month: Landslide risk continues until the monsoon withdraws.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best place to visit in India in September?
Ladakh is the best pick, with clear skies, thinning crowds and the Ladakh Festival. Kashmir is cool and dry, and Spiti has its last good month before winter. For festivals, Mumbai's Ganesh Chaturthi and Kerala's Onam usually fall in late August or September, and Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh hosts its music festival late in the month.
Is September a good time to visit Bali?
Yes. It is still the dry season, but the European summer crowds have gone and villa rates fall from their August peak. Expect sunny days around 30°C and calm seas for Nusa Penida. A 6-night land package starts from about ₹32,000 per person, and fares from India are usually lower than in June.
When should I book Diwali and Christmas trips?
Book in September. Diwali week and the 20 December to 2 January window are the two most expensive travel periods of the year for Indians, and fares to Dubai, Thailand, Singapore, Goa and Kerala rise steadily from about eight to ten weeks out. Hotels and visas can sometimes wait a little, but flights should not.
When does Oktoberfest take place?
Oktoberfest in Munich usually opens on a Saturday in the second half of September and ends on the first Sunday in October, running for about 16 to 18 days. Entry to the grounds and tents is free, but reserving a table needs months of notice. Munich hotels cost far more during the festival, so consider Augsburg or Salzburg.
Is September good for seeing the northern lights?
Yes, from about the middle of the month. Nights in northern Norway and Finnish Lapland are dark again, and the weeks around the equinox often bring good aurora activity. It is milder than winter, around 5–12°C, but cloud is more common, so plan at least three nights in Tromsø or Rovaniemi.
