When is the best time to visit Uzbekistan?
April–May and September–October. Days are 20–29°C, the skies are clear, and walking between the madrasas of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva is comfortable. July and August are the months to avoid for most travellers: Bukhara and Khiva regularly pass 40°C and the tiled courtyards radiate heat. Winter is cold but very quiet.
The table shows Tashkent. Samarkand, at about 700 m, is slightly cooler, while Bukhara and Khiva sit in desert lowlands and are 2–4°C hotter in summer and colder in winter.
Uzbekistan season by season
Spring: March to May
Navruz on 21 March brings street celebrations and sumalak, a wheat pudding stirred overnight. April is the most popular month, with blossom and green hills on the drive towards the mountains. May is warmer and drier; by late May Bukhara feels like summer.
Summer: June to August
June is manageable if you start at 7 am and rest through the afternoon. July is the hardest month, and few Indian families enjoy it. Prices drop, but so does your stamina. Late August eases and brings melon season.
Autumn: September to November
September and October rival spring and are often more settled. The light on the Registan is golden, bazaars overflow with grapes, pomegranates and melons, and trains sell out, so book Afrosiyob seats early. November is cooler and grey.
Winter: December to February
Cold, with occasional snow on the domes. Monuments are near-empty and hotel rates fall, but days are short and a few Khiva guesthouses close. Pack properly and it can be atmospheric.
Timing around Indian holidays
- May–June school holidays: go in May or early June; avoid late June onward.
- Diwali (8 November 2026): cool and quiet, with good hotel rates.
- Christmas–New Year: cold but uncrowded; Tashkent is festive.
