When is the best time to visit Kazakhstan?

It depends on what you want. For the turquoise lakes, Charyn Canyon and hiking in the Tian Shan above Almaty, go May–June or September. For snow and skiing, go December to March, when Shymbulak's slopes are open and Almaty sits below freezing. Most Indian travellers visit Almaty only, so the table shows Almaty's climate.

Almaty is at about 800 m with mountains rising to over 4,000 m right behind it, so weather changes quickly with height. Big Almaty Lake (about 2,500 m) is often 10°C colder than the city, and Shymbulak can have snow when Almaty has rain.

Kazakhstan season by season

Spring: March to May

March is slushy, and April and May are the wettest months. Even so, May is beautiful: apple trees in blossom, green foothills and comfortable days at Charyn. Mountain trails are muddy until late May.

Summer: June to August

Peak season. The lakes are at their brightest, the roads to Kolsai and Kaindy are open, and the Medeu gondola runs to the Talgar pass at about 3,200 m. Almaty reaches 30°C, while Charyn's canyon floor gets hotter at midday. Weekends at Big Almaty Lake are crowded.

Autumn: September to November

September is the most reliable month: dry, clear and golden. October brings autumn colour and the first snow on the peaks. November is a grey gap when the lifts are not yet running.

Winter: December to February

Snow season. Shymbulak usually opens in December, Medeu's outdoor rink is open, and Big Almaty Lake freezes. The downside is smog on still winter days, caused by coal heating, and road access to remote lakes becomes unreliable.

Timing around Indian holidays

  • May–June school holidays: the best summer window; book flights early.
  • Diwali (8 November 2026): cool and quiet, but too early for reliable snow.
  • Christmas–New Year: the classic snow trip; book Shymbulak ski passes and hotels well ahead.

Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days per trip. See the Kazakhstan visa page for the conditions.

Frequently asked questions

When does Almaty get snow?
Almaty city usually sees snow from late November or December to early March, while Shymbulak resort above it is reliably snowy from December to March and sometimes into April. If snow is the point of your trip, late December to February is the safest window.
When is Big Almaty Lake at its best?
June to September, when the lake turns its famous turquoise and the access road is clear. In winter it freezes and turns white, which some travellers also enjoy. The lake is a drinking-water reservoir, so you view it from the shore path; swimming is not allowed.
Is Almaty good for a Diwali trip?
Early November is quiet and cool, with autumn colour fading and highs around 8–10°C. The ski lifts are usually not running yet and snow in the city is not guaranteed, so treat it as a sightseeing trip. For snow, aim for Christmas or later.
How cold is Almaty in winter?
January averages around 0°C by day and −9°C at night in the city, colder at Shymbulak. Cold snaps can go well below that. Pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves and waterproof boots, and expect smog on windless days in the city.
