  • Passport valid at least six months from entry, with two blank pages
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket departing within 14 days
  • Hotel bookings for every night
  • Proof of funds: international card plus some US dollars
  • Travel insurance with medical cover (recommended)
  • For stays over 14 days: visa issued against an invitation from a Kazakh host or tour operator

Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • Arrival day counts as day one; the 15th day is an overstay, which can mean a fine and deportation.
  • Visitors without a return ticket within 14 days can be refused entry, and airlines in India may check at boarding.
  • Visa-free entry does not cover paid work, study or medical treatment.
  • Kyrgyzstan, the usual add-on from Almaty, needs its own e-visa for Indians.

Do Indians need a visa for Kazakhstan?

Not for short trips. Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days per visit, with a cap of 42 days in any 180-day period. The exemption, set by a 2022 government decree, covers tourism, private visits and short business trips. Anything longer, and any work, study or medical treatment, needs a visa.

How to plan the trip, step by step

  1. Check your passport has at least six months' validity from entry and two blank pages.
  2. Book a return or onward flight that leaves within 14 days of arrival. This is the single most important document.
  3. Book hotels for every night. For short stays, registration of foreigners is handled for you, so you do not need to visit a migration office.
  4. Arrive in Almaty or Astana and present your passport. There is no visa form and no fee.

Direct flights from Delhi to Almaty take roughly four hours, which is why Kazakhstan has become a popular long-weekend trip.

What immigration actually checks

Officers look at your return ticket, your hotel bookings and, sometimes, your money. Carry an international card and some US dollars. Visitors without a return ticket within the 14 days can be refused entry, and airlines in India may ask to see it at check-in.

Count your days carefully. The day you arrive counts as day one, and the 15th day is an overstay, which can mean a fine, deportation and trouble on future trips.

Combining Kazakhstan with Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan

Bishkek is a four-to-five-hour drive from Almaty, and many Indian travellers combine the two. Kyrgyzstan needs its own e-visa for Indians, and Uzbekistan usually does too. If you leave Kazakhstan and come back, a fresh 14-day visit starts, but the 42-days-in-180 cap still applies.

Staying longer than 14 days

You will need a visa. Kazakh visas are issued against an invitation that a host, hotel or tour operator obtains from the migration service, after which you apply online or through the embassy. Budget roughly ₹4,000–7,000 and allow at least a week, sometimes longer.

Tips for families and seniors

  • Children need their own passports, and the 14-day rule applies to them too.
  • Big Almaty Lake sits at about 2,500 m and the Shymbulak ski area rises above 3,000 m; take it slowly with older parents.
  • Winters are severe, with Astana regularly below minus 20°C; pack properly from December to February.
  • Vegetarian food is manageable in Almaty and Astana, with several Indian restaurants, but thin in the countryside.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kazakhstan visa-free for Indians?
Yes, for short visits. Indian passport holders can stay up to 14 days per visit without a visa, with a maximum of 42 days in any 180-day period. The exemption covers tourism, private visits and short business trips, not paid work, study or medical treatment.
What documents do Indians need at Kazakhstan immigration?
A passport valid at least six months from entry with two blank pages, a confirmed return or onward ticket within 14 days, hotel bookings, and proof you can pay for the trip, such as an international card or US dollars. Travel insurance is recommended, though not always checked.
Can I extend my 14-day visa-free stay in Kazakhstan?
Not as a tourist on the visa-free regime. If you need more than 14 days, apply for a visa in advance, which requires an invitation from a Kazakh host or tour operator. Overstaying even by one day can lead to fines and deportation.
Do I need to register in Kazakhstan?
For short visits, registration is generally handled automatically on entry and by your hotel, so you do not need to visit a migration office. If you stay in a private flat, ask your host to confirm your stay is registered, and keep your booking details handy.
Can I visit Kyrgyzstan and come back to Kazakhstan visa-free?
Yes. Re-entering Kazakhstan starts a new visit of up to 14 days, but total time in Kazakhstan cannot exceed 42 days in any 180-day period. Kyrgyzstan itself needs a separate e-visa for Indian passport holders, so apply for that before the trip.
