How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Use Yandex Go for taxis; street taxis often overcharge visitors.
  • Join shared tours for Charyn and the lakes; private cars cost much more for two people.
  • Visit the Shymbulak gondola on a weekday, when tickets can be cheaper and queues shorter.
  • Travel in May or September for good weather without the July–August and New Year peaks.
  • Pay by card where you can; Kazakhstan is highly card-friendly and you avoid carrying excess tenge.

How much does a Kazakhstan trip cost from India?

For a 4-night Almaty trip with the mountains and lakes, plan on about ₹62,000 per person at mid-range, twin sharing, including non-stop return flights from Delhi. Land-only, the same trip starts around ₹32,000. Budget versions with a 3★ hotel and shared tours start near ₹48,000, and luxury trips start from about ₹1.2 lakh.

There is no visa cost: Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days per trip. That, plus short non-stop flights from Delhi and Mumbai, makes Almaty one of the best-value mountain trips from India.

Where does the money go?

Flights are the biggest cost. Non-stop flights to Almaty run from Delhi and Mumbai on Air Astana and IndiGo, from about 3.5 hours on the shortest routing. Other cities connect via Delhi or Mumbai.

Hotels in Almaty's central Golden Square area cost ₹6,000–9,000 a night for a good 4★ double. Budget 3★ rooms start around ₹3,500.

Tours are the main ground cost. The Charyn–Kolsai–Kaindy day is long and best done as a tour; Big Almaty Lake is a shorter half-day. The Medeu–Shymbulak gondola is paid separately and varies by day and season.

Winter extras: a ski pass, gear and a lesson at Shymbulak add about ₹5,000–9,000 a day per person.

Money on the ground

The tenge is the currency, and Kazakhstan is one of the most card-friendly countries in the region; contactless works almost everywhere in Almaty. Carry a little cash for bazaars, village stops and park fees. Our foreign exchange service can load a forex card. Overseas packages bought from an Indian operator attract TCS, adjustable against your income tax.

Carry a printed return ticket and hotel booking. Airlines and border officers may ask for them even though no visa is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Almaty trip cost for a couple from Delhi?
A 4-night mid-range trip for two costs from about ₹1,24,000, including non-stop return flights, a 4★ hotel, guided lake and canyon tours and the Shymbulak gondola. Budget couples can manage from about ₹96,000 with a 3★ hotel and shared tours. No visa fee applies.
Is Kazakhstan cheaper than Georgia or Azerbaijan?
They are in a similar band. Kazakhstan saves the visa fee and has non-stop flights from both Delhi and Mumbai, while tours to Charyn and the lakes cost a little more because of the distances. Overall, a 4-night Almaty trip costs about the same as a 4-night Baku trip.
How much does a ski trip to Almaty cost?
Add about ₹5,000–9,000 per person per day for a ski pass, rental gear and a beginner lesson at Shymbulak. A 4-night winter trip with two ski days typically starts around ₹70,000–75,000 per person with flights. Christmas–New Year rates are higher, so book early.
How much cash should I carry to Kazakhstan?
Very little. Cards and contactless payments work in taxis via app, restaurants, malls and most shops in Almaty. Carry about USD 50–100 per person in tenge for markets, park fees, village cafés and tips on the lake tours.
