Quick answer

June splits India in two: the monsoon reaches Kerala around 1 June and spreads north through the month, while the high Himalaya opens up. In India, the best picks are Ladakh, Spiti Valley and Kashmir, all largely outside the rain. Abroad, choose Switzerland for long alpine days, Bali for its dry season, or Norway for the midnight sun.

Spiti Valley

Kunzum Pass usually opens in June, completing the Shimla–Kaza–Manali circuit. The campsites at Chandratal reopen and the skies are clear for stargazing.

It is still peak season, with green meadows in Pahalgam and Sonamarg and warm days in Srinagar. The Amarnath Yatra usually begins in late June or early July, bringing extra security and convoy timings on the Pahalgam and Baltal roads.

The Valley of Flowers National Park opens on 1 June, though the bloom peaks from mid-July to mid-August. June is drier for the trek from Govindghat via Ghangaria and the climb to Hemkund Sahib.

Kerala backwaters, Houseboats, India23–30°C, heavy rain

Kerala

The south-west monsoon usually arrives around 1 June, and Ayurveda centres treat it as the best season for treatments. Resort rates in Kumarakom and Kovalam drop sharply.

Dharamshala and McLeodganj

At about 1,800 m, McLeodganj stays near 25°C, and the Triund trek is open before the heavy July rain. It is a little calmer than Manali and Shimla in June.

Upper station, Solang Ropeway in Solang valley, near Palchan, Kullu district.13–27°C, rain late in the month

Manali

Rohtang Pass is usually open with a permit, Solang has paragliding, and the Atal Tunnel leads to Sissu and Keylong in Lahaul. Weekends are crowded; mid-week stays are much calmer.

Living root bridge, Meghalaya, India.15–24°C, very wet

Meghalaya

The monsoon fills Nohkalikai and the Seven Sisters falls, and the valleys around Cherrapunji turn deep green. Expect heavy rain and fog, so plan short drives and keep a buffer day.

Best places abroad in June

Rice terraces, Bali23–31°C, dry

Bali

The dry season is in full swing, with low humidity and good surf on the Bukit peninsula. Indian school holidays push up rates in early June, so the second half of the month is better value.

Norway and Finland

The midnight sun lights northern Norway around the clock in late June, and the fjord routes and the Flåm Railway run full timetables. Midsummer, around 20–24 June, is a holiday weekend across the region.

Lower Kolsay lake. Kolsay lakes national park, Almaty Region, Kazakhstan.15–29°C, mostly dry

Kazakhstan

Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy are reachable and green, Almaty's Medeu and Shymbulak are cool, and direct flights from Delhi make a short trip practical. It costs less than Europe for a similar mountain holiday.

BAKU AT NIGHT .THE TOWERS IN RED18–28°C, dry

Azerbaijan

Baku's seafront is warm and the mountain resorts of Gabala and Shahdag are green and cool at about 20°C. Short flights and an online e-visa make it a popular summer pick for Indian families.

Canadian Rockies

June opens the Rockies season, as the lakes thaw to their turquoise colour and the Moraine Lake shuttles begin. Apply for the Canadian visitor visa well ahead, because processing from India can take several weeks or longer.

How do summer holidays and the monsoon shape June travel?

June is two seasons at once. North Indian schools stay closed until about the end of the month, so hill stations, Kashmir, Ladakh and family favourites abroad remain at peak prices. At the same time, the south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala around 1 June, Mumbai in the second week and Delhi near the end of the month, going by IMD's normal onset dates. Beach and backwater destinations switch to monsoon rates.

That makes June a good month to be flexible. Book Ladakh, Kashmir and Himachal six to eight weeks ahead; Kerala, Goa and the Konkan can be booked a week or two out at much lower prices. Our weekend getaways pages list monsoon-friendly drives from Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.

Where is the weather best in June?

In the rain shadow of the Himalaya. Ladakh and Spiti get very little monsoon rain, and June is when their roads open fully; things to do in Spiti Valley covers the loop. Kashmir is warm and mostly dry, and McLeodganj and Manali are pleasant in the first half of the month.

Abroad, it is summer in Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, and the dry season in Bali. See the best time to visit Switzerland for what opens when.

Where should you avoid in June?

  • Goa, Kerala and Konkan beaches for swimming: Seas are rough and swimming is banned on many beaches. The monsoon is the point, not the beach.
  • Andaman Islands: Rough seas cancel some ferries and most dive trips.
  • Phuket, Krabi and the Maldives: All are in their wet season. Rates are low, but expect rain, wind and choppy transfers.
  • Dubai, Qatar and Oman: Highs pass 40°C with humid nights.
  • Rajasthan and the plains before the rain: Late-June heat is still above 40°C in much of the north.
  • Char Dham late in the month: Landslides begin with the monsoon. If you go, travel in the first half of June.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best place to visit in India in June?
Ladakh and Spiti Valley are the best picks because they sit in the Himalayan rain shadow and their roads open fully in June. Kashmir is warm and mostly dry, and the Valley of Flowers opens on 1 June. For a monsoon break, Kerala's Ayurveda resorts and Meghalaya's waterfalls offer low rates and heavy rain.
Is June a good time to visit Kerala?
For the monsoon, yes. The rains usually arrive around 1 June, and Ayurveda centres consider June to August the best season for treatments. Hotel rates fall sharply and the hills are green. It is not a beach month: swimming is unsafe and many beaches fly red flags. Houseboats still run on the backwaters.
Which international destinations are good in June?
Switzerland, Norway and the rest of northern Europe have long, mild days. Bali is in its dry season, and Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey are warm and cheaper than western Europe. Avoid the Gulf, where highs pass 40°C, and Thailand's Andaman coast and the Maldives, which are in their wet season.
When does the monsoon reach Delhi and Mumbai?
Going by IMD's normal dates, the monsoon reaches Kerala around 1 June, Mumbai around 11 June and Delhi around 27 June. Actual onset can vary by a week or more either way. Plan Goa, Kerala and Konkan trips with the rain in mind from early June, and expect flight delays in Mumbai on heavy-rain days.
Do I need a permit for Rohtang Pass?
Yes. Vehicles going to Rohtang Pass from Manali need an online permit, with a daily cap on numbers, and the pass is usually closed to tourists on Tuesdays for road maintenance. Permits sell out quickly in June, so apply as soon as your dates are fixed. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu does not need a Rohtang permit.
