Quick answer
The best times to visit Japan are late March to mid-April for cherry blossoms and late October to early December for autumn colours, with mild temperatures in both. They're also the busiest periods, so book hotels three to four months ahead. Avoid Golden Week (29 April–5 May), the June rainy season and the August heat if you can.

When is the best time to visit Japan?
Japan has four proper seasons, and the two Indian travellers ask about most are spring and autumn. Late March to mid-April brings cherry blossom (sakura) to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, with daytime highs of 14–19°C. Late October to early December brings autumn colours and clear, dry days. Both are crowded and expensive, and both are worth it.
There's a catch if you're planning around Indian holidays: neither season lines up with the May–June school break. Diwali falls in late October or November, though, which suits the autumn window well.
How accurate are cherry blossom dates?
Blossoms open at different times each year and move north over about six weeks. Tokyo's first bloom has historically come around 20–25 March, with full bloom about a week later; Kyoto and Osaka run a few days behind. Japanese weather companies publish forecasts from December and update them weekly. Book refundable hotels and give yourself at least 8 days, so that part of your trip lands on peak bloom.
Is summer a bad time to visit Japan?
June is the rainy season, July is hot and humid, and August regularly crosses 35°C, with typhoon risk from August into September. Obon week in mid-August fills the trains. Summer is also the season for festivals, fireworks and climbing Mount Fuji (roughly July to early September), so it suits some travellers, just not most first-timers.
What about winter?
December to February is cold but sunny on the Pacific side, with Tokyo at 1–12°C. It's the cheapest time for hotels, and Hokkaido has excellent snow. Many shops, restaurants and some temples close from 29 December to 3 January.
Avoid Golden Week, 29 April to 5 May. It's Japan's biggest holiday, and everything from bullet trains to ryokans is booked out.
