How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Skip the Japan Rail Pass for a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip; point-to-point tickets cost less.
- Eat breakfast and some lunches from convenience stores, where rice balls, sandwiches and fruit cost ₹400–800.
- Fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka on a one-stop airline to avoid a ₹8,000 shinkansen ride back.
- Stay in business hotels near JR stations rather than in Ginza or Roppongi; rooms are small but cheaper and save travel time.
- If price matters most, travel in January, February or June and avoid sakura, Golden Week and Kyoto's maple season.
- Carry your passport when shopping to claim the 10% consumption-tax refund; Japan is moving to a refund-at-departure system from November 2026, so keep receipts and allow time at the airport.
How much does a Japan trip cost from India?
A 7-night Japan trip costs about ₹1.05–1.6 lakh per person from India, twin sharing, including return flights. The lower figure assumes business hotels, point-to-point trains and self-guided sightseeing; the higher one assumes 3-star and 4-star hotels near major stations, a Mount Fuji tour, ticketed sights and meals out. A luxury trip with 5-star hotels and a ryokan night starts around ₹3.5 lakh.
Japan is more affordable than many Indian travellers assume. The yen has been weak for several years, temple entry costs ₹230–460, and convenience-store food is good and cheap. The big costs are flights, hotels and the shinkansen.
What drives the cost?
| Factor | Cheaper | Pricier |
|---|---|---|
| Season | January–February, June | Late March–early April, November |
| Hotels | Business hotels near stations | Ginza, Roppongi, Kyoto ryokans |
| Trains | Point-to-point tickets | A Rail Pass you don't use fully |
| Food | Convenience-store breakfasts, set lunches | Kaiseki dinners |
Visa and departure tax
Indian citizens need a visa, applied for through the VFS centres in India. The fee for Indian nationals is ₹500 plus a service charge, and processing usually takes about five working days. Japan's international departure tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 (about ₹1,750) from July 2026; it's built into your air fare. See the Japan visa guide.
Daily spending
Budget ₹4,500–7,000 per person per day for meals, Suica top-ups and entry fees, excluding the hotel. A convenience-store breakfast costs ₹400–800, a casual lunch ₹700–1,200 and a sit-down dinner ₹1,500–3,000. Cards work almost everywhere in the cities, but small temples, shrines and some restaurants are cash-only, so carry ¥10,000–20,000. A multi-currency forex card avoids your bank's mark-up; see our foreign exchange service.
TCS is added to overseas tour packages booked in India. You claim it back against your income tax when you file your return.
